Chicago Fire rally from 0-2 down to draw Orlando City 2-2 at Soldier Field

Orlando City SC jumped out to a 2-0 lead at Soldier Field before the half-hour mark and looked set to walk away with all three points. But Chicago Fire FC, which controlled the ball for nearly the entire match, stormed back in the second half to finish 2-2, salvaging a point that, given how the game played out, might even feel like too little.

The opening blow came fast. In the 5th minute, Ivan Angulo curled a left-footed finish from the left side to put Orlando ahead, assisted by Antoine Griezmann. Griezmann himself doubled the lead in the 34th minute with a left-footed strike from outside the box that flew straight into the top left corner, set up by Vinicius Nogueira. At 0-2, Orlando headed into the break in control of the scoreboard, even though the Fire were already starting to take over the run of play.

Along the way came a refereeing moment that could have changed the match: right before halftime, VAR reviewed and overturned a red card shown to Justin Ellis, leaving him with a yellow and on the field for the second half.

The Fire's response

Down on the scoreboard, Chicago came out swinging after the break and found a quick reward. In the 56th minute, Jonathan Bamba, just off the bench, got on the end of a cross from Leonardo Barroso and nodded home from close range to cut the deficit. The equalizer came twelve minutes later: in the 68th minute, Maren Haile-Selassie finished left-footed from the center of the box on a play that started from a corner kick and was set up by Bamba himself. From there to the final whistle, the Fire kept pushing, with further chances for Lewandowski and Bamba, but couldn't find a third goal.

The match statistics reflect that Fire dominance, especially in the second half:

StatisticChicago Fire FCOrlando City SC
Possession (%)58.141.9
Shots239
Shots on target55
Big chances32
Corners83
Passes507376
Fouls committed149

Twenty-three shots to nine, and more than double the corner kicks, make the home side's territorial edge clear. According to our expected goals estimate calculated from the match's shot data, the Fire generated 2.831 xG compared to Orlando's 0.983, a gap that confirms the draw was built on volume and persistence rather than clinical finishing, since each side's five shots on target ended up level on the final scoreboard.

The preview published ahead of the match gave Chicago Fire a 53% chance of winning, with 26% for Orlando and 21% for a draw, with expected goals of 2.49 for the home side and 1.74 for the visitors. The result ended up looking more like that probability split than like a clear-cut win: the Fire were indeed the team that generated the most, but they couldn't close out the match in their favor and settled for the draw, the least likely of the three outcomes according to that same projection.

What it means in the standings

In the Eastern Conference, Chicago Fire FC holds fourth place with 52 points from 32 matches played (15 wins, 7 draws and 10 losses), while Orlando City SC sits seventh with 43 points from the same number of matches (12 wins, 7 draws and 13 losses). The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 9 points. For the Fire, the draw caps off an afternoon in which they were down by two goals at one point; for Orlando, squandering a 2-0 lead built on two moments of individual brilliance leaves the feeling of points that slipped away at Soldier Field.
