Chivas rout Atletico San Luis 3-0 as own goal and defensive collapse sink the home side

Ten minutes. That's all Chivas needed to put the game away in San Luis Potosi. The Herd didn't even need to play well: it was enough to feed off the defensive meltdown that Atletico San Luis served up right from the start, riding it to a 3-0 rout at Estadio Libertad Financiera in Matchday 7 of the Apertura 2026.

The first blow landed in the 6th minute and it was a nightmare for Andres Sanchez. The San Luis goalkeeper ended up shoveling the ball into his own net with his back after a Santiago Sandoval shot clipped the post and the rebound caught him badly out of position. Own goal, 0-1, and the match hadn't even taken shape yet.

San Luis answered almost immediately. In the 8th minute, a mistake by Roberto Alvarado while playing out from the back gifted the ball to Sebastien Salles-lamonge, who fired a shot with Raul Rangel completely out of position, only for the crossbar to say no. And as often happens in soccer, that missed chance came back to bite them: just a couple of minutes later, in the 10th minute, Ricardo Marin struck a left-footed finish, assisted by Angel Sepulveda, to make it 0-2. Ten minutes in, the match was already all but decided.

That goal from Marin carries its own significance: it's his fourth goal of the Apertura 2026, matching his best scoring output in a single tournament, a mark he'd already hit with Chivas in the Apertura 2023 and with Puebla in both the Clausura 2025 and the Apertura 2025.

A physically brutal afternoon

If the scoreline was already painful, what followed finished ruining the day for the San Luis squad. In the 29th minute, Anderson Duarte had to come off with muscle discomfort and was replaced by Lucas Esteves. Four minutes later, in the 33rd minute, Andres Sanchez himself, the same goalkeeper responsible for the own goal, left the field in pain with an issue in his right thigh and was replaced by Gibran Lajud. Then in the second half, just when it seemed things couldn't get worse, Robson Bambu also went down and had to be carried off on a stretcher, with no substitutions left available: San Luis essentially finished the match with ten fit players on the field.

Given all that, there was no way back. San Luis tried to take control of possession in the second half but never found a way through the Guadalajara defense. And to put the finishing touch on the scoreline, Richard Ledezma, who had come on as a substitute, capped it off with a powerful right-footed shot to make it 0-3, the final score.

With this result, Chivas climbs to second place in the standings, while Atletico San Luis piles up another home stumble made worse by a growing injury list. There's no rest on the calendar: San Luis will travel to face Leon on Saturday, August 12 at Nou Camp, while the Herd will host Pumas on Sunday, August 13 at Estadio Akron, both matches part of Matchday 8 of the Apertura 2026.
