Chivu stands firm on Lautaro Martinez: "He's our captain, we're building something important"
The Romanian coach made the Milan club's stance clear ahead of the Serie A opener, though he admitted the transfer market plays by its own rules.

The European transfer window is just days from closing, and in Milan there's only one topic on the table: what's going to happen with Lautaro Martinez. While reports out of Spain keep insisting there's an early agreement with Barcelona, Inter has dug in its heels. And the man who stepped up to address it was exactly the one who needed to most: his coach.
Cristian Chivu had to face the question ahead of Inter's Serie A opener against Monza, and he didn't dodge a thing. Quite the opposite: he offered a clear statement on what the Argentine captain means to his project. "Lautaro is our captain. He's the player we're building something important around," the Romanian coach said at his press conference.
What stood out was that Chivu held nothing back, not even the uncomfortable part. He acknowledged that this kind of speculation is almost inevitable when a player of that caliber is involved, and that there isn't much a coach can do to stop it.
Probably over these ten days there will be a lot of talk about him, as has always happened. Important players have always had situations around them that a coach probably doesn't find funny at all.Cristian Chivu
A firm stance, with a caveat
That's where the coach drew the line. Without hedging, he said his plan is to keep Lautaro and that he trusts it will end up that way. "I'm holding on to Lautaro and I believe he'll be here for a long time," he said, in a line that sounds more like a firm hope than a sealed promise.
And that's the caveat many fans don't want to hear: Chivu knows the market plays by its own rules, and that no press conference statement is enough to shield a player. That's why he closed with a line that sums up pretty well how these situations play out at any big club in Europe.
But the market is always brutal, so I'm not going to give an answer on this. Of course, we want Lautaro to stay. That's my message.Cristian Chivu
The Argentine forward, the team's captain for some time now, has been pegged as one of Barcelona's targets, an interest that has gained steam in the Spanish press in recent weeks, where there has even been talk of an agreement between the parties. In Italy, though, the public stance is different: Inter has no intention of making an exit easy and continues to see Lautaro as one of the pillars of its sporting project.
With the market still open, the final word will come from whatever happens in the coming days. For now, the message from Inter's bench is one and the same: they want to keep their captain, even as Chivu himself admits that in this business, nothing is guaranteed until the transfer book closes.
