Cienciano falls 3-0 to Montevideo City Torque, exits Sudamericana in the quarterfinals

The dream ended in Montevideo. Cienciano fell 3-0 to Montevideo City Torque at Estadio Centenario and was eliminated from the CONMEBOL Sudamericana in the quarterfinals, losing the tie 3-2 on aggregate. A run that had captured the imagination of all of Peru came to a close right there, in Uruguay, against a rival that read the details of the series better.

Horacio Melgarejo's side started on solid footing. In fact, in the opening minutes it looked like the game plan might work: Neri Bandiera created a scoring chance that raised hopes of another magical night on the road. Torque controlled possession, yes, but Cienciano didn't look uncomfortable and answered quickly on the counter.

The trouble is that balance didn't hold for the entire first half. Torque eventually took control, and in the 38th minute the blow landed: after a series of turns inside the box, Salomon Rodriguez finished it off, and a weak response from Italo Espinoza handed the home side the opening goal.

With Cienciano short on offensive answers, Marcelo Mendez turned to his bench and brought on Nahuel da Silva to squeeze the visitors even further. It worked: the Papa attacked even less in the second half, and elimination started to feel inevitable. In the 57th minute, Rodriguez struck again, this time heading home a cross from the left to make it 2-0.

Just when it seemed the tie might be headed to penalties, a long ball caught the Peruvian defense out of position, and Nahuel da Silva completed the rout with the 3-0 that sealed Torque's place in the next round.

A run that ended where it had to end

What Cienciano did in this Sudamericana was no small thing. The Cusco club knocked out its archrival, Melgar, in the first phase, then built a genuine sense of belief: a road draw against Juventud in Montevideo and home wins over Academia Puerto Cabello and Atletico Mineiro. Cusco's altitude, once again, proved to be a key weapon for the Papa, just as it had in 2025.

The path wasn't a straight line. Cienciano's form on the road raised serious doubts and nearly cost it a place in the next round, but a home draw against Juventud opened the door to the playoffs. That's where, perhaps, the tournament's most memorable moment arrived: after losing 2-0 in the first leg to Lanus, Cienciano turned the tie around with a resounding 4-0. Then came the stunning 6-1 win over Botafogo, which fueled even more belief despite a narrow loss in the return leg in Rio de Janeiro.

Carrying that string of feats, Cienciano allowed itself to dream of the title. But Montevideo City Torque exposed its limits. In the first leg, the Papa created plenty but could only win 2-0, a modest scoreline given how the team had been playing at home. And in the return leg, the absences of Alejandro Hohberg and Claudio Nunez laid bare a thin squad, with little depth on the bench and some key players who failed to show up.

Melgarejo didn't shy away from self-criticism in the post-match press conference.

The Argentine coach also acknowledged that the opening goal shaped the entire course of the match.

From the first goal on, the match belonged entirely to City. We couldn't neutralize the movements they were making. First I want to congratulate City Torque and wish them the best going forward, but above all I want to praise and thank my group for their effort. Melgarejo was clear about what comes next: the team needs to "flip the switch" and focus on the Clausura to fight for an international berth. There, Cienciano sits seventh in the overall Liga1 standings with 40 points, inside Sudamericana positioning but five points off the Libertadores zone.
