Cienciano to Face Botafogo in Copa Sudamericana Round of 16 Without Suspended Garces and Arias
The team's top scorer and his key midfielder will miss Thursday's first leg after picking up accumulated yellow cards.

The squad list released by Cienciano carried news that Horacio Melgarejo won't be happy about. Two names who are usually near the top of the sheet are missing: Carlos Garces and Santiago Arias. Neither will be available for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana round of 16 against Botafogo.
The reason is purely procedural. Both players came into the tie with accumulated yellow cards and picked up their third caution in the second leg of the playoff round against Lanus, so the suspension rules them out right when the biggest matchup of the year in the continental tournament arrives. That detail, combined with the fact that the opponent is a heavyweight Brazilian club, makes the absence sting even more.
Garces isn't just any player for this Cienciano side: he's the team's top scorer in the competition, with 4 goals so far in the Sudamericana. His movement inside the box, his knack for finding the right space when Alejandro Hohberg or Cristian Souza slip him a pass, has been decisive throughout the campaign. Losing him right before facing Botafogo forces Melgarejo to rethink who fills that role up front.
The other loss hits differently but just as hard. Santiago Arias, the Uruguayan who plays as the holding midfielder, is the one who brings order to the team when games get tight. He's not just a marking midfielder: he also carries the ball cleanly out of midfield and shows up on set pieces, both defending them and adding danger going forward. The balance he provides won't be easy to replace.
When Cienciano and Botafogo Play
The first leg is set for this Thursday, August 13, at 7:30 pm (Peru time), at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega stadium. Cienciano will need to work around these two absences without losing its identity, knowing that on the other side will be a Botafogo squad that arrives as one of the tournament's favorites.
The second leg will be played in Brazil, so the result the Cusco side gets at home will be crucial for the tie as a whole. With Garces and Arias watching from the stands, the responsibility falls on the rest of the squad to pull off an upset against a rival playing at a different level.
