Garcés and Souza: the duo Cienciano is trusting to stop Botafogo in Cusco
The Ecuadorian and the Uruguayan are set to repeat their crosses-and-headers formula that already worked in the playoff against Lanús.

Cusco, the altitude, and a ball that comes down differently than it does on any other field. That combination has become Cienciano's best ally, and within that formula there are two names that have fans excited: Carlos Garcés and Cristian Souza.
"Papá" needs a win at home at the Inca Garcilaso de la Vega to keep its hopes alive in the CONMEBOL Sudamericana and reach the tournament's final eight. The opponent is no pushover: Botafogo arrives as the unbeaten leader of Group E and with the most prolific attack of the entire group stage, having scored 15 goals. To pull off an upset against a team like that, Cienciano knows it needs to lean on its best weapons, and that's where the Ecuadorian and the Uruguayan come in.
A partnership built for altitude
The duo works for a reason that's pretty simple to explain, though not so simple to stop: Souza delivers crosses, almost always from the right flank, and Garcés heads them home with an aerial game that has paid off time and again at the Inca Garcilaso. That connection has repeated itself in several matches and has become something of a trademark for the Cusco side at home.
That's where a factor Cienciano knows better than anyone comes into play: Cusco's altitude. Balls travel faster and drop with greater speed, which causes major problems for defenders who aren't used to playing in those conditions. For a visiting team that rarely sets foot on fields above 3,000 meters, clearing crosses under those circumstances becomes an uncomfortable task, and mistakes tend to show up right where Garcés feels most at home: inside the box.
That mix of a precise cross and a header already paid dividends in the previous round. Garcés and Souza were decisive in Cienciano's elimination of Lanús in the Sudamericana playoffs, a result that opened the door for the Cusco club to dream of something bigger in the tournament.
Now the challenge is bigger. Botafogo not only arrives unbeaten, it does so as the top-scoring team of the entire group stage, which means Cienciano can't afford to relax for a single second on defense while trying to make the most of its attacking formula. The fans, in any case, are confident. If the Souza-Garcés connection showed up again against Lanús exactly when it was needed most, there's no reason to think it can't happen again against a heavyweight opponent like the Brazilian side.
The tie will be played in Cusco, a place where few visitors manage to feel comfortable, and where Cienciano has learned to turn that discomfort into its best weapon for advancing to the next round.
