Cristante puts Roma ahead, but Brown levels for Fenerbahce in Champions League

Cristante put Roma ahead with a right-footed strike from outside the box in the 38th minute, but the lead lasted exactly nine minutes of actual play: right at the start of the second half, Archie Brown equalized to make it a final 1-1 at Chobani Stadyumu. A point apiece in the Champions League league phase, in a match that swung back and forth without either side managing to hold onto the advantage.

The first half was an end-to-end affair with more intent than precision. Fenerbahce struck first with chances from Bartug Elmaz and Kerem Akturkoglu, both shots well handled by Svilar, and Mason Greenwood also tested the keeper before the break. Roma, for their part, had a shot from Dybala inside the box that clipped the crossbar area. But the goal came from Cristante in the 38th minute: he received a pass from Donyell Malen and fired a low shot just inside the left post, leaving the home goalkeeper with no chance. The teams went into the break with Roma up 0-1, after a first half with no stoppage time added.

Fenerbahce's response came quickly. Just after the restart, in the 47th minute, Archie Brown popped up in the middle of the box to finish left-footed after a through ball from Greenwood, leveling the score at 1-1, where it would remain.

Chances, a VAR check and Ake's crossbar

The match stayed open after the equalizer. Vedat Muriqi tried his luck from inside the box and Bartug Elmaz sent a shot well over the bar on a counterattack, while on Roma's side Donyell Malen had two consecutive attempts in the box that were blocked. In the 68th minute VAR stepped in to review a possible penalty for Roma, a decision that was ultimately not awarded.

The closing stretch had more scares than goals. Matias Soule came close with a header off the crossbar before being substituted, and deep into stoppage time it was Nathan Ake who headed off the crossbar following a cross from Levent Mercan, in Fenerbahce's clearest chance of the entire second half. No further goals came and the score held until the finish, with four minutes of added time not enough to tip the balance either way.

What the numbers say

Roma controlled the ball more and completed more passes, but it was Fenerbahce that generated more offensive volume: more shots, more shots on target and more clear-cut chances. That gap also shows up in the xG calculated after the match, which puts the home side at 1.593 against Roma's 0.617, an in-house estimate based on shot location rather than a pre-match prediction.

The projection we published before kickoff gave Fenerbahce a 38% chance of winning, 28% for a draw and 34% in favor of Roma, with combined expected goals of 2.88. The result ended up matching the second most likely of the three scenarios, the draw, though the way the game played out (with the home side generating more danger despite seeing less of the ball) added some nuance to what was expected to be an even contest.

The draw leaves both sides with a point after their first match in this league phase: Roma sits in 15th place and Fenerbahce in 17th, separated by goal difference, since neither team has scored or conceded more than a one-goal margin so far in the competition.
