Fenerbahçe Builds Its Most Ambitious Squad Yet, Returns to Champions League League Phase After 18 Years

Some clubs spend money. Other clubs spend money with a plan. Fenerbahçe has gone more than a decade without winning the Turkish league, dragging around five consecutive runner-up finishes, and decided enough was enough. The response was to assemble what is probably the most ambitious squad in its recent history: Ederson, Nathan Aké, Milan Škriniar, N'Golo Kanté, Matteo Guendouzi, Marco Asensio, Mason Greenwood, Romelu Lukaku and Vedat Muriqi, all under the same crest. As if that weren't enough, the club is also back in the Champions League league phase after 18 years away.

The frustration in Turkey comes with hard numbers attached. In the 2023-2024 season, Fenerbahçe racked up 99 points and lost just one match in 38 games. Still finished second, three points behind a Galatasaray side that built a run of four straight titles. Former club president Ali Koç summed it up in a line that stuck:

The gamble on José Mourinho in 2024 didn't pan out either. Despite an outlay of more than 100 million euros, "The Special One" finished second in the league and was knocked out of the 2025-2026 Champions League by Benfica, never once beating archrival Galatasaray along the way. After a brief stint under Domenico Tedesco, the club turned back to a familiar name: İsmail Kartal, a manager who knows the pressure of Istanbul from the inside.

A Squad Full of Stars, a Manager From Within

Kartal has already left his mark since returning: getting the team into the Champions League league phase. He celebrated with words that make the project's ambition clear:

The signings back up that ambition. Greenwood arrived from Olympique de Marseille for a club-record 39 million euros, topping the transfer fee paid for Guendouzi (28 million), who had joined from Lazio in January 2026. Lukaku arrived from Napoli, and Muriqi returned to the club after stints at Lazio and Mallorca. On defense, the club added Aké (formerly of Manchester City) and Diego Carlos, back from his loan spell at Como, on top of Ederson and Asensio, who had joined earlier. Kanté and Škriniar, with backgrounds at Chelsea, PSG and Inter, round out a list that reads impressively on paper.

Looking back at the two qualifying matches and the most recent league game, a pattern emerges: Kartal quickly settled on a starting core and barely touched it since. Ederson in goal, a back line of Škriniar, Aké, Semedo and Brown, and the double pivot of Kanté and Guendouzi featured in all three matches, within a 4-2-3-1 setup with Muriqi as the target man and Talisca operating just behind him. Experience rules the back line, that group averages around 30 years old, with the exception of Brown, who is 24.

Up front there's more rotation. Greenwood was the only fixed winger, while Lukaku and Malian forward Dorgeles Nene have always come on from the bench, adding a different kind of speed once the opponent is already tired. It's a clear formula: keep a recognizable structure in place and use the squad's depth of talent to change details, not the whole shape.

A History That Already Touched the Elite

Fenerbahçe isn't coming into this challenge from nowhere. In the 2007-2008 Champions League, with Zico as manager and names like Roberto Carlos, Alex and Diego Lugano on the roster, the club reached the quarterfinals, its best result in history. It knocked out Sevilla in a tie that finished 5-5 on aggregate and was decided on penalties, then fell to Chelsea, with Ballack and Lampard, after winning 2-1 in Istanbul and losing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge. What followed was nearly two decades of closed doors: nine eliminations in earlier rounds before this qualification. That's why this return to the league phase carries so much weight.

The question left hanging is easy to ask and hard to answer: is stacking up this many big names enough to compete with Europe's giants? Fenerbahçe already knows what it's like to give a Chelsea side trouble. Now, with Kartal in charge, the club wants to find out whether that potential can hold up over eight matches against the continent's elite, all while still chasing the Turkish title that has slipped away for more than a decade.
