Croatia edges Czechia 1-2 in Nations League opener
Goals from Modric and Pasalic overturned a brief Karabec equalizer and sealed a Croatian win in Group A3.

Play had barely resumed at Fortuna Arena when Luka Modric curled a right-footed finish into the top corner to put Croatia ahead. Not even a minute had gone by since the restart. Czechia answered quickly, with Adam Karabec leveling things at the 53rd minute, but Croatia struck again through Marco Pasalic at the 76th minute and closed out a 1-2 win in a group-stage clash of the UEFA Nations League.
The first half had been a back-and-forth affair without goals, with Croatia setting the tone through Franjo Ivanovic and Igor Matanovic, who tested Matous Trmal on several occasions without success, while Czechia defended with discipline and rarely threatened going forward. The scoreless deadlock at the break felt shaky, and the start of the second half proved it: Modric made no mistake with a ball from Matanovic inside the box to open the scoring right out of the locker room.
The equalizer that wasn't enough
Czechia's response came fast. Just seven minutes after Croatia's goal, Adam Karabec struck a left-footed shot off an assist from Adam Hlozek to make it 1-1 and pull the home crowd back into the match. For a good stretch, Czechia found room to work and even had chances to take the lead, but Croatia, with more possession and more dangerous forays forward, eventually took control of the game's rhythm.
The decisive blow arrived in the 76th minute: a cross from Ivan Perisic found Marco Pasalic, who had just come on, and he headed home from close range with ease to make it a final 1-2. Two minutes later, Czechia thought they had equalized again with a goal from Matej Radosta, but VAR disallowed it and the call was confirmed: no goal. There were no further scares after that, despite five minutes of stoppage time and a late attempt from Ante Budimir that was saved.
The numbers back up the dominance
Croatia controlled the game for the better part of ninety minutes, and the stats make that clear.
| Stat | Czechia | Croatia |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43.6 | 56.4 |
| Shots | 5 | 16 |
| Shots on target | 2 | 5 |
| Big chances | 1 | 3 |
| Corners | 1 | 6 |
| Passes | 451 | 564 |
| Fouls committed | 6 | 9 |
Based on our post-match estimate calculated from the match's shots, Croatia generated 2.119 expected goals compared to 0.972 for Czechia, a gap that confirms the result was no fluke: the visitors had more and better chances across the ninety minutes.
What the preview said
Ahead of the match, our projection gave Croatia a 50% chance of winning, against 24% for Czechia and 26% for a draw. We had also forecast a total of 2.95 goals, with 1.77 for Croatia and 1.19 for Czechia. The final score, with three goals split 1-2, ended up lining up fairly well with what was expected, even if the path there (with Karabec's brief equalizer) added some extra flavor to the match.
What the result means
With this win, Croatia sits on 3 points in Group A3, in second place, while Czechia remains without points after this opening matchday. The gap between the two sides in the standings stands at 3 points. For the home side, the challenge now is to bounce back after a match in which they competed at times, but in which Croatia proved sharper in the moments that mattered.
