Cruz Azul Leaves Erik Lira Out of Squad to Focus on Monaco Move

The Mexican midfielder is not in the squad to face Atlas in matchday 5 of the Apertura 2026 because the coaching staff wants him to avoid split focus.

Cruz Azul's squad list to host Atlas featured an absence that speaks louder than any injury report: Erik Lira. The midfielder, a regular fixture in the Cruz Azul lineup, is not on the list for tonight's match in matchday 5 of the Apertura 2026, and the reason has nothing to do with a physical issue.

According to sources close to La Maquina consulted by ESPN, the call was made by the coaching staff led by Joel Huiqui himself. The thinking is simple: let Lira focus entirely on sorting out his future instead of splitting his attention between the field and his phone. Right now, the player's head is somewhere else.

The reason? A concrete offer from Monaco that has been on the table for several days now. Cruz Azul, per those same sources, still isn't fully convinced by the terms on offer, but that hasn't slowed down the talks. Both clubs remain in active negotiations to try to finalize the Mexican midfielder's move to European soccer, a destination he has dreamed of for much of his career.

Nothing is signed yet. A deal isn't imminent, but it's moving in the right direction, and that's precisely why Cruz Azul chose to leave him out tonight. The same source noted that Lira has looked a bit anxious and distracted in recent training sessions, understandable given a transfer of this magnitude looming over him. Facing that scenario, the club preferred to ease the pressure and give him a breather rather than risk putting him on the field with his mind elsewhere.

Time, however, is working against everyone involved. The European transfer window closes on the last day of August, so Cruz Azul, Monaco and the player himself all know the coming weeks will be decisive in either sealing or scrapping the deal.

Other Squad News

Lira isn't the only storyline within the squad list to face the Rojinegros. Gonzalo Piovi and Rodolfo Rotondi were left out entirely for tonight's match. On the bright side, Cruz Azul gets back two important pieces: Willer Ditta and Agustin Palavecino have both recovered from their respective injuries and are available again for Huiqui ahead of the clash with Atlas.
