Cruzeiro and Flamengo Split the Points in Copa Libertadores Round of 16
The tie will be decided at the Mineirão in the second leg after a level first leg in the round of 16.

Cruzeiro and Flamengo drew 1-1 at Estadio Mineirão in a round of 16 Copa Libertadores clash that had a bit of everything: a cagey first half, a second half with two goals in barely 14 minutes, and an ending that leaves the tie wide open heading into the second leg.
A Cautious First Half, Then the Floodgates Open
The first 45 minutes were mostly a feeling-out process with few clear chances. Flamengo held the ball more often, but genuine opportunities were scarce. The best of the opening half came from a Bruno Henrique shot that clipped the crossbar in the 34th minute, off a cross from Giorgian de Arrascaeta, a warning sign of the danger the visiting attack posed. Cruzeiro, for its part, created chances through Keny Arroyo and Matheus Pereira, but couldn't seriously trouble Agustín Rossi. The score remained scoreless at halftime.
The story changed after the break. In the 52nd minute, Keny Arroyo finished with his left foot from inside the box, curling it into the top corner off an assist from William, to make it 1-0 and light up the Mineirão. Flamengo's response came quickly: just 14 minutes later, in the 66th minute, following an Ayrton Lucas cross from a free kick, Léo Ortiz crashed a header off the post, and on the rebound Lucas Paquetá, who had come on minutes earlier in place of Arrascaeta, tapped the ball in from close range to make it a final 1-1.
The closing stretch saw attempts from both sides (Jorge Carrascal and Matheus Pereira both tried their luck without success), but the scoreline held despite five minutes of second-half stoppage time.
The Numbers Behind the Match
Flamengo was more dominant in possession and chance creation, as reflected in the match's official statistics:
| Stat | Cruzeiro | Flamengo |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 46.6 | 53.4 |
| Shots | 11 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 5 |
| Corners | 2 | 4 |
| Passes | 434 | 508 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 14 |
According to an in-house post-match xG estimate based on shot location, Flamengo generated 1.726 expected goals compared to Cruzeiro's 0.849, a gap that backs up the visitors' greater offensive output, even though it was the home side that scored first and held on for the result until the end.
Our Projection Versus What Actually Happened
Ahead of the match we published a projection giving Flamengo a 39% chance, Cruzeiro 31%, and a draw 30%, with expected total goals of 2.50 (1.17 for Cruzeiro and 1.33 for Flamengo). The final result, with a goal for each side, landed close to that script in terms of scoring, though the draw was actually the least likely of the three outcomes we laid out, something the match ended up confirming with a tightly contested tie right to the final whistle.
What the Match Leaves Behind
The draw at the Mineirão leaves the round of 16 tie wide open, with neither side able to gain an edge in the first leg. Cruzeiro made the most of its lone big offensive burst of the second half, while Flamengo leaned on its substitutions, with Lucas Paquetá making an immediate impact by scoring minutes after coming on, to avoid losing ground in the tie. The result means both teams will have to settle everything in the next chapter of this matchup.
