Dario Osorio Signs With Crystal Palace for 26 Million Euros
The Chilean winger becomes the third most expensive transfer of a player from his country, trailing only Arturo Vidal and Alexis Sanchez.
A kid who came up through Universidad de Chile's youth ranks has ended up signing for a Premier League club. Just like that: Dario Osorio is now a Crystal Palace player, in a deal that leaves Midtjylland with a fee it had never seen before for any of its players.
The move was structured as a loan with a mandatory purchase option, a common formula in European soccer used to spread payments over time, but in practice it amounts to the same thing: Osorio belongs to Palace. The agreed fee is around 26 million euros, with up to 4 million more in add-ons tied to performance targets. For Midtjylland, which developed him from the moment he arrived as a promising young Chilean, it's the biggest sale in the club's history in the Danish league.
How does a 22 year old winger command a fee like that? With numbers that kept growing match after match. During his time at the Danish club, Osorio played in 121 matches, scored 25 goals, provided 18 assists and logged 7,860 minutes on the field. That consistency, combined with his explosiveness and his ability to break down defenses out wide, put him on the radar of several major clubs on the continent, until England ultimately won the race for his signature.
A Spot Among the Priciest Transfers in Chilean Soccer History
The fee also carries historic weight back home. With this transfer, Osorio slots into the top three most expensive transfers involving a Chilean player, trailing only two names that need no introduction: Arturo Vidal, who moved from Juventus to Bayern Munich for around $42 million, and Alexis Sanchez, who left Barcelona for Arsenal for roughly $38 million. Not bad for a player who was making his debut at the Estadio Nacional in the blue jersey just a few seasons ago.
Now a new chapter begins. The Premier League shows no mercy to anyone who arrives unprepared, and Crystal Palace will need Osorio to adjust quickly to a pace of play far more intense than what he knew in Denmark. The good news is he won't be alone: this season he'll share the league with fellow Chilean Marcelino Nunez, who plays for Ipswich Town. Two Chilean surnames that, every Sunday, will give La Roja's fans an extra reason to check the English table.
