Dembélé faces Barcelona again, this time as Ballon d'Or winner with PSG
The Frenchman, who left Catalonia under a cloud, arrives at Tuesday's clash as European champion and the best player in the world.

Some reunions sting more than others. Ousmane Dembélé's with Barcelona is one of them, because it tells the story of a path nobody could have imagined just a few years ago: that of a questioned signing who ended up becoming the best soccer player in the world. Next Tuesday, October 20, the Frenchman will once again cross paths with his former club, this time at Parc des Princes and wearing the jersey of a PSG side that needs no introduction.
To understand what this match means, you have to go back to 2017. Barcelona paid around 150 million euros for Dembélé, who arrived from Borussia Dortmund, with the impossible task of filling the void left by Neymar's move to PSG. Reality turned out differently: between 2017 and 2023, injuries became his constant shadow. He had the speed, the explosiveness, that one-on-one unpredictability that fans fall in love with, but he could never sustain it over time. Under Xavi Hernández he showed flashes of being an important player, but there was no agreement on a new contract, and in August 2023 he left for PSG through a 50 million euro release clause.
The transformation under Luis Enrique
What was experienced in Barcelona as just another departure turned into the start of a different story in Paris. Luis Enrique found a way to squeeze everything out of him: he pulled him away from relying solely on the wing and moved him increasingly closer to the box, turning him into an attacking focal point, sometimes as a false nine, sometimes as an out-and-out center forward. That shift hit directly on what had always been his weak point, finishing, and turned it into one of his greatest strengths.
The results speak for themselves: a 2024-25 season in which he led PSG to their first Champions League title, capped off with the 2025 Ballon d'Or. With the 2025 and 2026 titles, PSG claimed back-to-back Champions League crowns, something not even Neymar, Mbappé and Messi together had managed before.
There's a curious parallel here: Dembélé arrived at Barcelona to fill Neymar's shoes, and years later, the two ended up crossing paths again in Paris, though with very different outcomes. Neymar did lift the Champions League, but with Barcelona, back in 2015; at PSG he never managed it. Dembélé experienced the opposite.
A tie that left its mark
If there's one prior meeting that explains the tension surrounding this reunion, it's the 2024 quarterfinal tie. On April 10, in the first leg, PSG fell 3-2 at Parc des Princes, but Dembélé scored against his former team and celebrated it, a gesture that did not go unnoticed. In the second leg, on April 16 at Montjuïc, Ronald Araujo's first-half red card changed the complexion of the match: with a man advantage, PSG stormed back to win 4-1, sealing a 6-4 aggregate victory. Dembélé scored again and was a key figure in a result that knocked Barcelona out of Europe despite having arrived with the lead.
The most recent meeting also left its mark: on October 1, 2025, PSG beat Barcelona 2-1 at Montjuïc, with Ferran Torres scoring for the Catalans and Gonçalo Ramos netting the winner in the 90th minute. Dembélé couldn't even play in that match due to injury.
Now the stage shifts once again. The Barcelona that Dembélé will face belongs to Hansi Flick, built around a generation led by Pedri, Cubarsí and Lamine Yamal, the very player who ended up inheriting the right wing spot the Frenchman left behind. The context is also different from 2024: Dembélé arrives as Ballon d'Or winner and European champion, while Barcelona will look to stand up to the reigning continental champions. Dembélé already knows what it's like to knock his former club out of Europe; now he'll try to beat them again, but from a completely different place than the young player who never quite fit in Catalonia.
