Diego Moreira joins Milan from Strasbourg for 50 million euros
The 22-year-old Belgian winger has signed a five-year contract with the Rossoneri, who are bolstering their squad for the Europa League under head coach Ruben Amorim.
Fifty million euros for a 22-year-old winger who has yet to complete a full season as an undisputed starter in Europe. That is how boldly AC Milan bet on Diego Moreira, the club's newest signing, who arrives from Strasbourg on a five-year contract.
The Italian club confirmed the deal in a statement released Monday night, closing a transfer worth around 50 million euros (about $58.5 million). It is a hefty price for a player who, until recently, had not even fully settled which national team he would represent.
Moreira's story has an unusual twist. Having come up through youth ranks in both Belgium and Portugal, it was not until May 2025 that FIFA gave him clearance to commit permanently to the senior Belgian national team. That decision opened the door to the World Cup: he made Belgium's squad and played in one match, coming off the bench in the second half of the comeback win over Senegal, 3-2, in the round of 16.
Before landing in Milan, the winger spent time at Chelsea, which sold him to Strasbourg in 2024 without him ever making his Premier League debut. Now, after a stint in France, he steps up to Serie A to strengthen a Milan side that will play in the Europa League this season, Europe's second-tier club competition, after finishing fifth in Serie A last season. He will be coached by Ruben Amorim, the club's new head coach.
A financial relief for Strasbourg
Moreira's departure is not an isolated move for Strasbourg. With this sale, the French club has now brought in nearly 100 million euros (about $117 million) in transfers this week alone. That is no coincidence: the team, owned by the same group that owns Chelsea, BlueCo, is under close financial scrutiny from UEFA.
In June, European soccer's governing body fined Strasbourg 13 million euros (roughly $15 million) for breaching financial control rules by overspending. It was, in fact, the largest financial penalty UEFA handed out to any club last season. UEFA also demanded that the club "significantly" cut spending on player wages ahead of 2026, a year in which Strasbourg will have no European competition after reaching the semifinals of the Conference League, UEFA's third-tier continental tournament.
Against that backdrop, selling Moreira for such a fee not only gives Milan a young player with international experience, but also provides Strasbourg the financial breathing room UEFA specifically demanded.
