Isak's Lightning Double in Eight Minutes Sends Liverpool to 2-0 Win at Portman Road
The Liverpool striker scored in the 5th and 8th minutes to seal a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League.

It took Alexander Isak just three minutes to settle the match. The striker scored in the 5th minute and struck again in the 8th minute, and that lightning double was enough for Liverpool to leave Portman Road with a convincing 2-0 win over Ipswich Town in the Premier League.
The first was a finish of real quality: Isak latched onto a through ball from Cody Gakpo and curled a right-footed shot from the right side of the box into the top corner, giving the home goalkeeper no chance. Barely three minutes later he repeated the trick: another Gakpo assist slipped in behind the defense, and this time Isak finished with his left foot into the middle of the goal. Ipswich, who had barely touched the ball, found themselves down two goals before they had even settled into the game.
From there, the match changed shape. Ipswich tried to respond with Julio Enciso as their main source of danger, testing the Liverpool goal from outside the box on several occasions without troubling the scoreline, while Liverpool managed the lead without needing to push too hard. Dominik Szoboszlai and Florian Wirtz tried their luck from range, but Kjell Scherpen kept them out, and the match went into halftime with the 2-0 scoreline already in place.
In the second half Ipswich had their best spell, with chances for Abdul Fatawu and Enciso again, but they lacked the finishing touch to cut into the deficit. The only real scare for Liverpool came in the 68th minute, when the VAR reviewed a possible penalty for the home side and ultimately waved it away. With substitutions already made on both benches (Isak came off in the 63rd minute, his job done) the score held firm despite late efforts from Jack Clarke and Kasey McAteer in stoppage time.
The numbers behind the dominance
Liverpool controlled more of the ball and created chances more often, though Ipswich were not short on shot volume, just accuracy.
| Stat | Ipswich Town | Liverpool |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 45.1 | 54.9 |
| Shots | 14 | 10 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 7 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 427 | 523 |
| Fouls committed | 6 | 13 |
According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot location, Ipswich generated 0.807 expected goals against Liverpool's 0.522. It's a curious detail: despite Isak's early double, it was actually the home side that created more danger over the rest of the match, just without being able to turn it into goals.
What the preview said and what happened
Before the match we projected a 60 percent chance of an away win, against an 18 percent chance of an Ipswich victory and a 22 percent chance of a draw, with a combined expected total of 3.44 goals between the two sides (2.24 for Liverpool and 1.19 for Ipswich). The final result came in under that combined figure, but it nailed the outcome: the favorite won, and did so by settling the match before the first quarter hour was even up.
What the result means
With this result, Liverpool moves to 5 points in the standings, the product of one win and two draws without a loss, putting them just 2 points behind Ipswich Town in the table. The home side, meanwhile, sit on just 3 points with one win and two losses, and continue to search for defensive stability early in the season. Isak's double in the opening eight minutes ended up being, in effect, all the difference Liverpool needed at Portman Road.
