Duván Vergara sets the record straight on deleted América photos: no transfer, just an unpaid debt

It only took a purge of Instagram photos to set off alarm bells among América de Cali fans. Duván Vergara, now playing for Racing, wiped every visual trace of the Cali club from his profile, and within hours social media was buzzing with speculation about a possible return to Colombian soccer through another door. The reality, according to the player himself, is far more down to earth: there's a debt involved.

Vergara had to clear things up with a statement on Instagram after the uproar took on a scale he says he didn't expect. The prevailing read was that some kind of approach with another team in the country was underway, something the player was quick to shoot down directly.

"The thing with the photos was my way of expressing a frustration that I chose to keep private for more than a year," the midfielder explained, making clear the gesture had nothing to do with a new destination, but rather with an unresolved matter he's been carrying with América for some time.

That matter, he detailed, is financial. Vergara said there is a financial commitment the club still hasn't honored, and that the prolonged silence around it had been weighing on him.

"I never wanted a personal decision on my social media to be read as a lack of love for América. I especially never imagined it would end up putting everything we've built together into question. My affection and respect for América and its fans remain intact. What changed was how I chose to express a frustration I'd been holding onto for too long," the midfielder concluded.

The message leaves a clear picture: there's no deal in the works with another Colombian club, but there is an unresolved account between the player and América's front office that, by all appearances, has gone unsettled for more than a year.
