Angers Makes Auxerre Pay for Wastefulness with 1-3 Road Win
The visitors made the most of their chances while Auxerre, with 60 percent possession, couldn't turn its dominance into goals.

Auxerre controlled the ball, fired twenty shots at goal and still walked away from Abbé-Deschamps empty-handed. Angers won 1-3 in a match that looked headed for a draw until Amine El Ouazzani showed up, twice. Ligue 1 produced a strange snapshot: the team that held the ball the most ended up the one in tears.
The blow landed fast. Just 4 minutes in, Branco van den Boomen surprised everyone with a strike from outside the box that snuck in on the right side of the home goal. Auxerre, playing at home, took half an hour to respond, but did so with a well-executed counterattack: in the 34th minute, Rémy Labeau Lascary equalized off an assist from Romain Faivre, firing low with his right foot just inside the post. The match went into halftime tied 1-1, and it looked wide open for either side.
The second half flipped the script. Angers, which had struggled to contain the home side's attacks, found the order it needed and struck twice in under ten minutes. First it was Harouna Djibirin, on from the bench, who finished with his left foot from the center of the box in the 69th minute off an assist from El Ouazzani. Then, in the 77th minute, El Ouazzani himself made it 1-3 with a low shot just inside the left post, following a headed flick-on from Ousmane Camara off a corner kick. Auxerre kept pushing until the end, through eight minutes of stoppage time, but couldn't close the gap.
Numbers That Don't Match the Scoreboard
What stands out is that the stats tell a different story. Auxerre held 60.1% possession to Angers' 39.9%, took twenty shots to the visitors' fifteen and racked up nearly double the passes. Even so, Angers was sharper when it mattered most.
| Stat | Auxerre | Angers |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 60.1 | 39.9 |
| Shots | 20 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 7 | 6 |
| Big chances | 2 | 3 |
| Corners | 7 | 10 |
| Passes | 495 | 316 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 6 |
The match's xG, calculated after the fact based on shot locations, came out nearly even: 1.97 for Auxerre against 1.907 for Angers. In other words, both sides generated similar amounts of danger, but Angers was more efficient at turning those chances into actual goals.
What It Means in the Standings
The result hits Auxerre hard, leaving the club without points after two matches in the competition, with a record of two losses and a goal difference of minus 5. Angers, on the other hand, has a record of one win and one loss through its two outings. There are only 3 points separating the two clubs in the standings, which makes sense given the competition has just started with plenty of matchdays left for things to sort themselves out.
With yellow cards shown to Van den Boomen, Elikya Legros, Clément Akpa, Prosper Peter and Sinaly Diomandé, the match also had its share of tension, especially in the closing stretch, when referee Hakim Ben El Hadj added eight minutes of stoppage time. For Auxerre, the takeaway is clear: generating volume wasn't enough, and the margin for error in Ligue 1 is razor thin. For Angers, the win confirms that even without the ball, a team can still take home all three points if it makes the most of the few chances that come its way.
