Aston Villa seals arrival of Suzuki and Ruggeri to bolster goal and defense
The Japanese goalkeeper and the Italian fullback are already available for this weekend's match against Brighton.

Two signings, one clear message: Aston Villa wants to lock down the flanks and shake up the goalkeeping picture before the transfer window closes. The Birmingham club confirmed on Wednesday the arrival of two reinforcements that had been in the works for weeks and already have a likely debut date.
The first is Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, who joins from Parma for 35 million euros. The second is left back Matteo Ruggeri, who arrives from Atletico Madrid for a fee close to 20 million euros. Two different positions, but the same urgency: Unai Emery needed to get both deals done.
A fullback to fill the void left by Digne
Lucas Digne's departure left an obvious gap on the left side, and that's where Ruggeri comes in. The Italian isn't coming from just anywhere: he's leaving Atletico Madrid with recent experience in a demanding league and still room to grow. For Emery, who usually insists on having clear options on both flanks, filling that spot had been pending business for some time.
Suzuki and the shadow over 'Dibu' Martinez
The signing generating the most buzz, though, is Suzuki's. The Japanese goalkeeper made 59 appearances across his two seasons at Parma and is a regular for the Japan national team, with whom he had a strong showing at the World Cup. He arrives in Birmingham as a goalkeeper expected to compete on equal terms for the starting job, not to sit on the bench.
And that's where the detail everyone is watching out of the corner of their eye comes in: Emiliano "Dibu" Martinez. The Argentine goalkeeper is under contract through the summer of 2029, but he's now spent two straight transfer windows flirting with an exit. Last year it was Manchester United that ultimately didn't pull the trigger on a deal, and just days ago it was Juventus that walked away from negotiations. With Suzuki arriving to fight for the spot, the understanding within the club's structure is that the Japanese goalkeeper isn't landing there just to warm the bench.
Neither club nor the player have commented publicly on his immediate future, but Villa's move speaks for itself: reinforcing the goalkeeping position amid open questions about the starter is rarely a coincidence.
What's certain is that both Suzuki and Ruggeri are already available to join the squad, and both could make their Aston Villa debuts this weekend, when the team hosts Brighton & Hove Albion. It will be the first real indication of how much these two signings factor into Emery's immediate plans.
