Athletic Rout Atletico Madrid with Two Goals in Two Minutes After the Break

It took Athletic Club just two minutes to flip a match that had gone against them for most of the first half. In the blink of an eye, spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second, Nico Williams and Robert Navarro made it 2-0 at San Mames, and Oihan Sancet added a third in stoppage time to complete the 3-0 final score against an Atletico Madrid side that controlled possession for nearly the entire match but couldn't find a reward.

What stands out is that nothing in the first half hinted at what was coming. Atletico started the stronger side, with Lee Kang-In cracking a shot off the post just two minutes in, and for long stretches of the opening 45 minutes they moved the ball with ease. But Athletic held firm, creating chances of their own through Iñaki Williams and Oihan Sancet testing the goalkeeper, and the 0-0 scoreline held until the end of the first half. Then came the first blow: in the 45th minute, deep into stoppage time, Nico Williams headed home from the center of the box to make it 1-0, a goal that needed a VAR review before being confirmed.

The psychological blow proved decisive. Moments after the restart, in the 47th minute, a quick counterattack ended with Robert Navarro slotting home low, just inside the left post, off an assist from Iñaki Williams, making it 2-0. In barely two minutes of actual play, Athletic had turned an even contest into a comfortable lead.

Atletico Kept Crashing Into the Woodwork

What followed was a string of Atletico attempts that never translated into goals. Pablo Barrios struck the right post just seconds after Athletic's second, and Barrios himself, along with Marcos Llorente and Julian Alvarez (who came on from the bench), kept trying their luck without success through a string of saved or off-target shots between the 67th and 87th minutes. Atletico finished with more possession, more shots and more corners, but lacked precision in front of goal, and the Athletic keeper won most of those individual battles.

The final blow came in the 89th minute, when Oihan Sancet finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 3-0, putting any hope of a comeback to rest for good.

The Numbers Behind the Paradox

The stats capture the contrast between the visitors' control and the home side's finishing. Atletico held 61.6% of possession to Athletic's 38.4%, and also led in shots, shots on target and corners.

Even so, our expected goals estimate calculated after the match based on the shots taken favors Athletic: 1.81 to Atletico's 0.80. In other words, even though Atletico fired more shots and saw more of the ball, Athletic generated higher quality chances, especially with the clinical finishes that ended up in the net.

The result also runs completely counter to our pre-match projections. Our preview gave Atletico Madrid a 52% chance of winning, with just 22% for Athletic and a draw at 26%. The expected goals figures published beforehand pointed to a tight match, with Atletico favored offensively (1.75 to Athletic's 1.09). None of that held up: the team with the slimmer odds on paper ended up running away with it.

What This Means for the Table

In the standings, both sides arrived with similar records: Atletico Madrid sat sixth with 7 points from 4 matches, while Athletic Club were seventh with 6 points, also from 4 matches, with just a single point separating them before kickoff. With this win, the Basque side makes a statement at San Mames that reshuffles that midtable battle in LaLiga, while Atletico will have to make sense of a defeat that their own possession and shot numbers don't fully explain.
