Bottom-of-the-table Borussia Mönchengladbach stun Stuttgart 2-3

Despite falling behind in the 4th minute and conceding 70% possession, Borussia Mönchengladbach stormed back with three goals and held on to beat Stuttgart 2-3 in the Bundesliga.

Bottom-of-the-table Borussia Mönchengladbach stun Stuttgart 2-3

Borussia Mönchengladbach arrived in Stuttgart sitting dead last in the Bundesliga with just three points from seven matches, and left the MHPArena with a stunning 2-3 win that upends any preseason forecast. Ermedin Demirovic put VfB Stuttgart ahead after just four minutes, but Alexander Blessin's side fired back with three straight goals between the end of the first half and the opening half hour of the second, then held on until the final whistle despite a late response from Demirovic himself.

The opening minutes suggested a comfortable afternoon for Sebastian Hoeneß's Stuttgart. In the 4th minute, Demirovic finished with his right foot from outside the box after a headed pass from Dzenan Pejcinovic, making it 1-0. The hosts controlled the ball for nearly the entire match, finishing with 70.4% possession, and created clear chances through Lorenz Assignon and Ramon Hendriks, but couldn't add to their lead. A much more direct Borussia Mönchengladbach found the equalizer in the 37th minute: Joe Scally struck with his right foot from the center of the box off an assist from Zento Uno, making it 1-1, the score at halftime.

Borussia Mönchengladbach's second-half heist

The script flipped entirely as soon as the second half began. In the 50th minute, Shuto Machino finished left-footed from the center of the box, top left corner, off a pass from Wael Mohya, putting Gladbach up 1-2. Fifteen minutes later, in the 65th minute, Mohya himself extended the lead with a close-range header, assisted by Scally, making it 1-3. Stuttgart, who had controlled the ball for most of the match, suddenly found themselves behind on the scoreboard against an opponent that had seen far less of the ball but was converting at a far higher rate.

The response didn't come until the 82nd minute, when Demirovic scored his second goal of the afternoon with a close-range header off a cross from Jamie Leweling, who had come on in the second half. The 2-3 scoreline brought late tension, with Stuttgart pushing forward through Deniz Undav, Bilal El Khannouss and Grischa Prömel in search of an equalizer, but Borussia Mönchengladbach held firm to protect the lead until the final whistle.

What the numbers show

The stats reflect that contrast between control and efficiency: Stuttgart dominated possession and racked up far more passes, but Borussia Mönchengladbach had more total shots and more shots on target.

The expected goals figure, calculated after the fact based on shot location, also backs up the result: 1.981 for Stuttgart versus 2.518 for Borussia Mönchengladbach, a gap that supports the visitors' clinical finishing beyond the raw shot count.

The contrast with pre-match projections is stark. Our preview gave Stuttgart a 68% chance of winning, just 13% to Borussia Mönchengladbach and 19% to a draw, with expected goals of 2.52 for the home side against just 1.05 for the visitors. What actually happened was the exact opposite of what the model predicted: the team with far longer odds on paper walked away with all three points thanks to a clinical second-half display.

What the result means

In the Bundesliga standings, this was a meeting of the bottom two clubs: Stuttgart came in 14th with 6 points after six matchdays, while Borussia Mönchengladbach sat rock bottom in 18th with just 3 points, a 3-point gap separating the two sides before kickoff. The win lets Borussia Mönchengladbach collect a full three points in the competition where they needed it most, while Stuttgart, despite controlling the ball and creating chances across all 90 minutes, once again come away empty handed from a match that looked all but settled after just four minutes.
