Coventry City stuns Sunderland 3-1 despite seeing less of the ball
Sakamoto, Awoniyi and Rudoni put the hosts ahead before halftime and held off Le Fée's penalty and the visitors' control of the game to seal the win.

It took Tatsuhiro Sakamoto just 16 minutes to tear up the script. His left-footed strike from outside the box opened a night that Coventry City would go on to settle 3-1 against Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena. The odd part is that nothing in the match numbers hinted at a rout like this from the home side, and that's exactly the story behind the scoreline.
Coventry, bottom of the table scrap with just three wins in nine league games, came out electric in the first half. Sakamoto's goal was followed in the 36th minute by Taiwo Awoniyi, who finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0 before the break. Then, barely into the second half, in the 51st minute, Jack Rudoni stretched the lead with a left-footed shot from outside the area, assisted by Victor Torp, making it 3-0 and seemingly putting the game to bed.
The penalty that cut the gap
Sunderland, who came in with more possession and more ball circulation throughout the match, finally got something to show for it via VAR. In the 62nd minute, a handball by Ethan Pinnock inside the box was reviewed and the referee pointed to the spot. Enzo Le Fée made no mistake from twelve yards, driving it right-footed into the top left corner for the 3-1 in the 66th minute, the goal that set the final tally and forced Coventry to manage the lead for nearly half an hour more, including nine minutes of stoppage time.
Despite the result, territorial control belonged to the visitors: Sunderland held 56.5% possession and finished with more shots (17 to 12) and more completed passes (438 to 339). Coventry, though, was sharper where it counts, putting four shots on target compared to Sunderland's two, and that difference in precision explains much of the outcome.
| Statistic | Coventry City | Sunderland |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 43.5 | 56.5 |
| Shots | 12 | 17 |
| Shots on target | 4 | 2 |
| Corners | 4 | 4 |
| Passes | 339 | 438 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 9 |
Our own expected-goals estimate, built from the match's shots, backs up that reading too: Sunderland generated an xG of 1.69 against Coventry's 0.86, suggesting the visitors created more and better chances, but Coventry was far more efficient in finishing theirs.
The contrast with our preview projections is striking. Before kickoff we had Coventry at a 36% chance of winning, 31% for a draw and 33% for Sunderland, with combined expected goals of 2.41. Reality ended up well above that projection in terms of scoring, and on top of that the outcome favored the very team that had less of the ball.
What it means in the table
In the Premier League standings, the result carries relative but real weight: Coventry City stays in fifteenth place with 9 points from nine games played, while Sunderland sits in twentieth with 5 points from the same number of matches, a 4-point gap between the two sides. Neither club is going through a comfortable stretch in the table, but on this night at the Coventry Building Society Arena, the team with less of the ball was the one celebrating.
With Le Fée's penalty standing as Sunderland's only visible consolation, Coventry City walks away with a 3-1 win built on three clinical finishes in the first half and the start of the second, enough to withstand the opponent's pressure and possession the rest of the way.
