Coventry Wins With Just One Shot as Forest Fire Blanks From 24 Attempts

Nottingham Forest spent ninety minutes hammering at a door that simply wouldn't open. 24 shots, 62.6% possession, corner after corner, and in the end the scoreboard told the opposite story: Coventry City won 1-0 at The City Ground on a single shot on target, and it was enough.

The goal came in the 54th minute. Carl Rushworth, the visitors' goalkeeper, played the pass that split the lines and found Jay Dasilva alone on the left side of the box. The defender finished left-footed through the middle of the goal for the 0-1 that would stand for good. The first half ended 0-0 despite the siege.

In the second half Coventry held firm and found the reward on its first clean look of the period. Forest responded by bringing on Igor Jesus for Dan Ndoye and kept pushing: Ousmane Diomande, Neco Williams, Igor Jesus himself with a point-blank effort and another header. Nothing would go in.

VAR denies the equalizer

The most dramatic sequence came near the end. In the 85th minute, Igor Jesus turned the ball home and The City Ground erupted, but VAR reviewed the play and the goal never made it onto the scoreboard. Two minutes later came the official confirmation: no goal, and Coventry's 0-1 lead held despite six minutes of stoppage time tacked on at the end.

The numbers behind the barren dominance

Our own xG estimate, calculated from the match's shots, has Forest at 1.56 against Coventry's 0.75, a gap that confirms the home side created more and better chances, but in soccer creating chances isn't always enough when the opponent converts the only one it gets.

The contrast with what was projected before kickoff is stark: our preview gave Nottingham Forest a 63% win probability, just 14% to Coventry, with expected goals of 2.03 for the hosts against 0.89 for the visitors. None of that held up. The team with the longer odds on paper won, and it did so without needing to control the ball or the territory.
