Crystal Palace routs Lech Poznan 4-0 to open Europa League campaign with a perfect start

Goals from Pino, Richards, Strand Larsen and Nketiah sealed a rout that went beyond expectations despite a rival that created more chances.

Crystal Palace routs Lech Poznan 4-0 to open Europa League campaign with a perfect start

Nine minutes. That's all it took for Crystal Palace to get on the scoreboard at Selhurst Park, and from there the match turned into a formality. The final score, 4-0 over Lech Poznan, left the Englishmen with a perfect record in the Europa League and sent the Poles home from London empty handed.

Yeremy Pino's early strike set the tone: a right footed finish from the center of the box made it 1-0. Lech, who had given a warning with a couple of attempts from Mikael Ishak and Patrik Walemark in the opening minutes, couldn't sustain that version of themselves. In the 26th minute, Chris Richards showed up at the back post to head home a corner delivery from Adam Wharton, and the 2-0 already began to settle the outcome of the night. Seven minutes later, Radoslaw Murawski brought down Pino in the box for a penalty, and Jorgen Strand Larsen made no mistake from the spot to make it 3-0. With that, the match was effectively decided before halftime.

The second half dropped in intensity, though Lech Poznan didn't fully give in: Luis Palma tested the Palace goal several times from outside the box and had a couple of dangerous forays. But things got even tougher for the visitors in the 86th minute, when Murawski picked up a second yellow card for dangerous play and left his side down to ten men. Two minutes later, deep into the closing stretch, Eddie Nketiah put the finishing touch on the rout with a low finish after a counterattack built by Dwight McNeil, making it a final 4-0.

What the numbers say

The stats reflect a match closer than the scoreline suggests. Lech Poznan actually had more total shots and more clear cut chances, but Crystal Palace was more clinical in the moments that mattered.

The post match xG, calculated based on shot location, gives 2.086 to Crystal Palace against 1.461 for Lech Poznan: a gap that backs up the home side's edge, though not to the extent of the final scoreline. The efficiency of each chance, more than the volume of play generated, ended up tipping the balance.

Our preview published ahead of the match gave Crystal Palace a 49% chance of winning, with 26% for a draw and 25% for Lech Poznan, with expected goals of 1.78 for the hosts and 1.21 for the visitors, a combined total of 2.99. The result ended up exceeding that projection: Crystal Palace not only confirmed the favorite status we gave them, but did so with a rout that the model hadn't anticipated on that scale.

What the match means for the table

With this result, Crystal Palace sit on 3 points from their opening match, with a goal difference of +4, while Lech Poznan remain pointless with a -4 goal difference after their first match. The gap between the two sides in the standings is 3 points, though it's worth remembering that with just one matchday played by each team, the table still says little about the real level of each squad in the competition.

What is clear after the match is Crystal Palace's efficiency in the key moments: three goals in the first half hour were enough to break down Lech Poznan's resistance, and the Poles never found a way to respond despite creating chances of their own over the course of the ninety minutes.
