Hamburger SV strikes twice in five minutes to sink Cologne at home

It took Hamburger SV just three minutes to flip a game it had been struggling through on its own turf into a 2-0 lead over 1. FC Köln. The home side won 2-1 at the Volksparkstadion in a Bundesliga match in which it barely touched the ball but found exactly the right moments to strike.

Cologne's dominance was clear for almost the entire game: the visitors finished with 68.2% possession to Hamburger SV's 31.8%, and fired off 18 shots to the home side's 12. But soccer doesn't always reward the team that tries hardest, and this time Merlin Polzin's side made the most of the chances it got.

Two blows in three minutes

The first half moved along through fouls, corners and the occasional stray shot until the 43rd minute arrived. A corner kick led to a cross from Albert Grønbæk that Nicolás Capaldo headed home from close range to make it 1-0 right before the break.

The psychological blow for Cologne came almost as soon as play resumed. In the 48th minute, again with Grønbæk supplying the assist, Yussuf Poulsen, who had just come on at halftime, finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 2-0. Two goals in five minutes, spanning the end of the first half and the start of the second, left Cologne needing to fight uphill for nearly the entire second period.

And Cologne did try. Luka Lochoshvili struck the post in the 73rd minute, and Saïd El Mala, Ragnar Ache and Ísak Jóhannesson all had clear chances that didn't find the net. The pressure eventually paid off late on: in the 89th minute, a cross from Ellyes Skhiri was headed in by Ragnar Ache to make it 2-1, but it came too late to change the result.
