Mainz 05 rout Hamburger SV 5-0 in a nightmare night for the hosts

Sheraldo Becker broke the deadlock in the 18th minute with a counterattack that left Hamburger SV frozen, and from there the game was effectively over. Mainz 05 went on to win 5-0 at the Volksparkstadion, with Phillip Tietz scoring twice and Phillipp Mwene and Ransford Konigsdorffer joining the party late on. For Hamburger SV, still without a win or a single point in the Bundesliga, the night was simply a nightmare.

Becker's opener came from a Kaishu Sano assist on a quick transition that left the home defense stuck watching. Hamburger SV had barely had time to settle before they were already behind, and the psychological blow showed: before halftime, in the 40th minute, Phillipp Mwene finished from close range, again assisted by Becker, to make it 0-2. That was the score at the break, though the match still had more to say.

The second half started in the worst possible way for the hosts: just two minutes after the restart, in the 47th minute, Phillip Tietz finished off a Becker cross to make it 0-3. Hamburger SV shuffled the bench, bringing on Fabio Vieira, Patson Daka and Shafiq Nandja right from the break, looking for a response, and had a few half chances through David Moller Wolfe and Fabio Vieira, but never truly troubled the visiting goalkeeper. Mainz, meanwhile, kept piling it on: Tietz struck again in the 82nd minute to make it 0-4, this time assisted by Lee Jae-Sung, and Ransford Konigsdorffer, who had come on for Becker, added the finishing touch in stoppage time, in the 90th minute, after a through ball from Mwene.

A dominance the numbers confirm

Hamburger SV had a bit more of the ball, but that was a misleading stat: Mainz 05 clearly outplayed them everywhere that mattered near the opposing box.

The shots on target tell almost the whole story: Hamburger SV only tested the visiting goalkeeper once in the entire match, while Mainz managed eight. Our estimate of xG generated in the match, calculated after the fact using the location of each shot, points in the same direction: 3.20 for Mainz against just 0.34 for Hamburger SV, a gap that pretty accurately reflects what happened on the field.

The result also contradicts what we had projected before kickoff. Our preview gave Hamburger SV a 34% chance of winning, 30% for a draw and 36% for Mainz 05, with expected goals of 1.28 for each side. None of that resembled what actually happened: a match we saw as evenly matched turned into a five goal beatdown with no reply.

What it means in the standings

In the Bundesliga table, Mainz 05 come into this match with a record of one win and one draw from two games played, and this rout should give a solid boost to their goal difference. Hamburger SV, on the other hand, still have not picked up a win: two losses in their two matches so far and a goal difference that is already the worst of all 18 teams in the table. There are 4 points between the two sides, a gap that felt a lot wider than the numbers suggest on this night at the Volksparkstadion.
