LA Galaxy rout Austin FC 4-1 behind a rampant Marco Reus
With three assists from Marco Reus and goals from Klauss, Lozano, Taylor and Sergi Roberto, the Galaxy dominated an Austin FC side that finished with ten men.

It took João Klauss just nine minutes to open the scoring at Dignity Health Sports Park, and from there the LA Galaxy never let go of control of the match. The final score, 4-1 over Austin FC, capped a performance of the kind you don't see every weekend: four different scorers, a flurry of chances, and a visiting side that could only muster one goal of individual quality in response.
The opener came from a right-footed finish by Klauss from the center of the box, assisted by Harbor Tarczynski-Miller. The Galaxy kept pushing, and in the 37th minute, Hirving Lozano doubled the lead with a header that found the left corner of the net off a cross from Marco Reus. At 2-0 at the break, the story of the game was already largely written.
What the Galaxy did at the start of the second half put the game out of reach for good. Just after the restart, in the 47th minute, Robert Taylor, who had come on for Lozano at halftime, finished into the top left corner off an assist from Reus to make it 3-0. Austin FC found a quick response: in the 53rd minute, Ervin Torres unleashed a right-footed strike from outside the box that nestled into the top corner, set up by a pass from Micah Burton, to make it 3-1. But the comeback bid didn't last long. In the 65th minute, Sergi Roberto, also with his right foot and once again served by Marco Reus, this time with a headed pass, made it 4-1. Reus closed out the night with three assists on the key plays of the match, always arriving at the right moment.
The closing stretch had an extra twist: in stoppage time, in the 95th minute, Zan Kolmanic was shown a red card for Austin FC, a rough end to the night for a team that no longer had any way to change the scoreline.
The numbers behind the dominance
The stats back up what played out on the field: the Galaxy were superior in nearly every category, especially when it came to finishing inside the box.
| Statistic | LA Galaxy | Austin FC |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 56.4 | 43.6 |
| Shots | 18 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 10 | 2 |
| Big chances | 3 | 2 |
| Corners | 7 | 5 |
| Passes | 556 | 415 |
| Fouls committed | 5 | 8 |
Ten shots on target against just two tell much of the story: Austin FC had the ball less, and when they did have it, they generated far less danger. According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot location, the Galaxy generated 2.42 expected goals to Austin FC's 1.58, a gap that lines up with the final score, though somewhat tighter than what the four home goals ultimately suggested.
Before kickoff, our model gave LA Galaxy a 45% chance of winning, a 26% chance of a draw and a 29% chance of an away win, with a total expected goals count of 3.09 (1.74 for the home side and 1.35 for the visitors). The home favorites delivered, but the final score blew past that forecast: among the five total goals scored, the match nearly doubled the goal expectancy we had laid out in the preview.
What the result means
In the Western Conference, the Galaxy sit in 7th place with 44 points on the season following this result, while Austin FC remain in 14th with 34 points, a 10-point gap between the two sides that showed up clearly on the field today. For the Galaxy, a night of strong attacking output with contributions from several different players. For Austin FC, another outing with little to take away beyond Torres's goal and the frustration of finishing a man down.
