Lyon Overpowers Angers to Climb Into Third Place
Goals from Nuamah and Tolisso sealed a complete Lyon performance, with the home side far superior to Angers across every statistic.

Lyon didn't need to do anything fancy. The home side dominated possession, created chance after chance, and closed out the match with a 2-0 win over Angers at the Groupama Stadium. A goal from Ernest Nuamah before halftime and a late header from Corentin Tolisso sealed an afternoon in which the hosts barely broke a sweat.
Things got difficult for Angers early. In the 14th minute, a VAR review ended up overturning a penalty call in Lyon's favor, a sign that the visitors were going to have to defend for dear life. And while they weathered that first wave, they couldn't hold out forever: in the 37th minute, Ernest Nuamah received a pass from Corentin Tolisso and finished with his right foot from the center of the box, a low shot that slipped in by the left post to make it 1-0.
Before that goal, there was no shortage of action: a Nuamah effort that ran into the goalkeeper, a Julien Duranville shot that missed by inches on the counterattack, and even a post for Angers off the boot of Prosper Peter, a warning that the visitors hadn't come just to hang on. That was, in fact, Angers' best moment of the entire match: in the 33rd minute, Peter's shot struck the left post after a cross from Yassin Belkhdim, the clearest chance Angers had in the 90 minutes.
The second half followed much the same script. Lyon kept creating through Nuamah, Julien Duranville and Abner Vinicius, with shots that went narrowly wide or found a well-positioned goalkeeper. Angers, for its part, had a couple of flashes through Prosper Peter and Amine Sbai, but lacked the sharpness to truly threaten. The result was put beyond doubt in the 85th minute: from a corner kick, Keito Nakamura whipped in a cross and Corentin Tolisso headed home from close range to make it a final 2-0.
The numbers behind the dominance
The stats reflect clearly what played out on the field: Lyon controlled the ball for nearly the entire match and had far more scoring chances than its opponent.
| Statistic | Lyon | Angers |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 63.8 | 36.2 |
| Shots | 21 | 8 |
| Shots on target | 5 | 2 |
| Big chances | 4 | 1 |
| Corners | 4 | 3 |
| Passes | 659 | 362 |
| Fouls committed | 16 | 6 |
Based on the shots taken in the match, our own expected goals estimate had Lyon at 2.67 against just 0.60 for Angers, a gap that confirms the scoreline wasn't the product of one-off efficiency, but of sustained superiority across the full 90 minutes.
We had already flagged that superiority in our preview: our projection gave Lyon a 69% chance of winning, with a 21% chance of a draw and just 10% for an Angers win, with expected goals of 2.06 for Lyon and 0.65 for Angers. The final score, 2-0, ended up lining up quite well with that forecast, both in terms of the winner and the goal distribution.
What it means in the standings
The win moves Lyon into third place in Ligue 1, with 17 points from 9 matches played (5 wins, 2 draws and 2 losses). Angers, meanwhile, sits in 15th place with 8 points from 9 appearances (2 wins, 2 draws and 5 losses), a 9-point gap between the two sides that was already apparent before a ball was even kicked. For Lyon, a match handled with authority at home; for Angers, another afternoon in which the defense was once again exposed against a higher-caliber opponent.
