Marseille erases early deficit, routs Angers 2-5 in seven-goal thriller with missed penalty
Marseille overcame Angers' early goal and, with five different scorers, won 2-5 in Ligue 1 in a match that included a penalty missed by Gouiri and another converted by Angers.

The final score reads 2-5, but the match at Stade Raymond Kopa was far closer than that scoreline suggests. Angers took the lead, had a penalty disallowed against Marseille, and found the back of the net twice. It wasn't enough: Marseille answered with increasing sharpness each time and walked away with all three points after an offensive showcase in Ligue 1.
The home side struck first. In the 13th minute, Lilian Raolisoa popped up at point blank range down the left and headed it in off the post for the 1-0. Marseille took a while to respond, but flipped the script entirely before halftime: Himad Abdelli headed in an equalizer in the 36th minute off a Timothy Weah cross, and six minutes later Nouhoum Kamissoko made it 1-2, also with a header, off a corner that turned the visitors' pressure into a lead. Bruno Génésio's side went into the break ahead despite conceding first.
In the second half, the match produced an unusual sequence in the 57th and 58th minutes: Amine Gouiri won a penalty, then missed it himself. It barely mattered: on the very next play, in the 59th minute, Gouiri scored anyway off a well-worked set piece to make it 1-3. Angers refused to fold and earned a penalty of their own, which Amine El Ouazzani converted in the 74th minute to make it 2-3, briefly leaving the outcome in doubt. But Marseille shut the door with authority: Amine Harit, with a shot from outside the box in the 82nd minute, and Igor Paixão in the 84th, rounded out the final 2-5.
The numbers behind the rout
The stats reflect the visitors' dominance across the full 90 minutes. Marseille controlled more possession, created more chances, and was considerably sharper in front of goal.
| Stat | Angers | Marseille |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 41.7 | 58.3 |
| Shots | 11 | 21 |
| Shots on target | 3 | 8 |
| Corners | 2 | 5 |
| Passes | 390 | 564 |
| Fouls committed | 11 | 12 |
The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots backs up that superiority as well: 1.829 for Angers against 3.173 for Marseille, a gap that confirms Génésio's side didn't just score more, it clearly created more danger throughout the match.
What's striking is that the result ended up blowing well past what was projected before kickoff. In our preview we gave Marseille a 55% chance of winning against 19% for Angers and 26% for a draw, with expected goals of 1.76 for the visitors and 0.97 for the hosts, a combined total of 2.73. The match ended with seven goals between the two teams, far above that projection, and while a Marseille win was seen as the most likely outcome, the way it unfolded, a five-goal rout, went completely beyond what we anticipated.
What the result means in the standings
In the table, both teams arrived with needs to address. Marseille sits in 8th place with 9 points from 7 matches played, while Angers is 15th with 7 points also from 7 matches, just 2 points behind before this game. The win lets Marseille breathe a little easier in the standings, while Angers, who showed they could create danger and score twice, were unable to capitalize on their good moments against a rival that proved more clinical when it mattered most.
Above all, the match leaves the image of a Marseille side that had to work its way back after conceding first, but once it took the lead gave Angers no way back in, driven by contributions from several of its attacking players, from Abdelli and Kamissoko to Gouiri, Harit and Paixão, all of whom found the back of the net by the final whistle.
