New England Revolution rally in stoppage time to beat Philadelphia Union 2-1 despite being outplayed
Despite firing 24 shots and scoring in the 101st minute, the Philadelphia Union could not avoid defeat against an efficient New England Revolution side that strengthens its grip on second place in the East.

The Philadelphia Union dominated nearly the entire match, fired off 24 shots and still ended up losing. The New England Revolution won 1-2 at Subaru Park despite being outshot on target by just two, and a goal in the 101st minute arrived too late for the hosts. Between the possession, the corner kicks and the missed chances, the Union kept running into the visiting goalkeeper, while the Revolution made the most of what little they had: one goal from open play and one from the penalty spot were enough to hold on for the win.
The first half was a parade of missed chances for the Philadelphia Union. Milan Iloski and Indiana Vassilev tried again and again without luck, and Quinn Sullivan also failed to find the net despite several attempts from inside and outside the box. But it was the New England Revolution who struck first: right at the start of the second half, in the 47th minute, Dor Turgeman finished from close range after an assist from Peyton Miller off a free kick, making it 0-1.
The Union threw everything at the equalizer, with shots from Iloski, Damiani and Sullivan that went wide or were saved. But late in the match came the blow that seemed to seal the game: in the 85th minute, VAR reviewed a foul by Neil Pierre on Carles Gil inside the box and awarded a penalty to the Revolution. Gil himself made no mistake from the spot in the 90th minute to make it 0-2.
With the match stretched by substitutions and stoppage time (12 extra minutes were played in the second half), the Philadelphia Union finally got their reward deep into injury time. In the 101st minute, off a corner kick, Kai Wagner whipped in a cross that Neil Pierre headed into the top corner to make it 1-2, the final score. There was no time left for anything more.
The numbers behind the hollow dominance
The stats confirm what played out on the field: a Philadelphia Union side that had the ball and kept trying, but could not turn that superiority into goals until it was too late.
| Stat | Philadelphia Union | New England Revolution |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 52.5 | 47.5 |
| Shots | 24 | 12 |
| Shots on target | 8 | 8 |
| Big chances | 3 | 2 |
| Corners | 4 | 6 |
| Passes | 464 | 429 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 7 |
The xG generated in the match, calculated after the fact based on shot location, also reflects that imbalance between attacking volume and the final result: 2.948 for the Philadelphia Union against 2.204 for the New England Revolution. Those numbers point to a game that was closer in quality of chances than the 12-shot gap in the home side's favor would suggest, and they help explain why the scoreline felt tighter than the territorial dominance implied.
The preview had pointed in the opposite direction from how things actually played out: our projection gave the Philadelphia Union a 56% chance of winning, with just 21% for the New England Revolution and a draw estimated at 23%. The expected goals figures published before kickoff pointed to a 2.11 to 1.26 edge for the home side. The result was exactly the opposite: the underdog walked away with all three points on the road.
What it means in the standings
In the Eastern Conference, the New England Revolution holds onto second place with 55 points, tied on points with Inter Miami CF but ahead in the standings, 9 points behind leaders Nashville SC. The Philadelphia Union, meanwhile, remains in sixth place with 46 points. It was a match the home side deserved more than the final score suggested, but one in which the New England Revolution knew how to be clinical exactly when it mattered.
