OFI Punishes Dominant Hoffenheim With Two Clinical Strikes to Win 2-0 in Europa League

TSG Hoffenheim had the ball, the corners and even the satisfaction of having pinned back its opponent for long stretches of the night at Pankritio Stadium. What it lacked, though, was the only thing that counts in the end: goals. OFI made the most of two surgical strikes, one in each half, to walk away with a 2-0 win that, on the balance of play, looks almost like an anomaly, and that against the scoreline makes one thing clear: in the Europa League, the team that attacks the most doesn't always win.

The first blow landed just as the match was settling into a rhythm. The numbers tell a very different story from the scoreline. Hoffenheim controlled 67.2% of possession to OFI's mere 32.8%, and doubled its rival's shot count: 21 to 9. The German side also topped the Greek club in corners, passes and big chances created, though the gap in that last category was minimal.

Not even the xG figure calculated from the match's shots, an in-house estimate produced after the fact rather than a prediction, clearly favors the result: Hoffenheim generated 2.001 expected goals to OFI's 1.565.
