Paderborn stuns Hoffenheim with 3-1 rout despite barely touching the ball

Paderborn looked doomed by the numbers before the ball even rolled: our model gave the home side just a 32% chance of winning, against 43% for Hoffenheim. But soccer doesn't read projections, and at the Home Deluxe Arena the home team ended up cruising to a 3-1 win despite spending much of the match chasing the ball.

The first blow landed in the 28th minute: off a corner kick, Santiago Castañeda struck a left-footed shot from the center of the box that snuck in low, just inside the post. Thirteen minutes later, right before halftime, Stefano Marino doubled the lead with a close-range finish off a cross from Laurin Curda, and Paderborn went into the locker room up 2-0, even though the scoreline didn't quite match what was happening on the field, since Hoffenheim was already starting to take over possession.

The start of the second half seemed to confirm that feeling: just minutes after the restart, in the 49th minute, Adam Daghim cut the deficit with a shot from the center of the box off an assist from Max Moerstedt. Hoffenheim pushed hard for the equalizer, with Bambasé Conté and company creating chance after chance, but Paderborn held firm and, on one of its rare forays forward, sealed the game in the 68th minute: Steffen Tigges, who had come on at halftime, headed home a cross from Jonah Sticker to make it a final 3-1.

Dominance that wasn't enough

The stats tell a story almost the opposite of the scoreline. Hoffenheim moved the ball with ease and piled up attempts, but Paderborn was far sharper when it came to finishing.

The shots-on-target column tells much of the story: Paderborn needed just five shots on frame to score three goals, while Hoffenheim, despite 23 total attempts, managed only two on target. Our xG estimate, calculated from the match's shots, tempers the result somewhat: 1.75 for Hoffenheim against 1.38 for Paderborn, a gap that suggests the visitors created enough danger for a tighter scoreline but couldn't convert it at the right moment.

Neither team is anywhere near the top of the Bundesliga table yet, but for Paderborn, a win like this, earned despite ceding the ball and the corner count, is the kind of result that carries more weight than the match stats would suggest.
