Porto blows past Arouca to stay perfect in Liga Portugal

VAR chalked off a Jakub Kiwior goal in the 58th minute, and for a while it looked like that would be the story of the night at the Estádio do Dragão. But FC Porto kept pushing until it finally broke down Arouca's resistance, winning 2-0 with goals from Gabri Veiga and Borja Sainz in the second half.

The result keeps Porto on top of Liga Portugal, with a perfect record through three matches.

A siege that took time to pay off

Porto's first half amounted to an exercise in forced patience. From the opening whistle the home side camped in Arouca's half and racked up chance after chance: Pepê tried his luck from outside the box, Jakub Kiwior and Victor Froholdt both headed goalward from corners, and William Gomes tested the visiting keeper with a low shot from the middle of the area. Nothing went in. Not even a header from Barbero for Arouca, virtually the visitors' only chance of the entire first half, changed the story: the teams went into the break at a cold 0-0 that hardly reflected what had happened on the field.

The second half opened with more of the same: Gabri Veiga tried his right foot, Pepê rattled the crossbar with a header in the 56th minute, and two minutes later came a moment that could have changed everything ahead of schedule. Kiwior sent the ball in, the celebration began, but a VAR review wiped out the goal and the score stayed level.

The breakthrough finally arrived in the 66th minute: a well-worked counterattack ended at the feet of Gabri Veiga, who finished with his left foot from inside the box after a pass from William Gomes to make it 1-0. Arouca, having already made two changes in search of a response, found no way to trouble a Porto side that kept creating chances with ease. The second goal came in the 85th minute, when Borja Sainz, on from the bench, finished left-footed off a cross from Pepê. That goal also went to a VAR review before being confirmed, sealing the final 2-0.

The numbers confirm the dominance

Porto's superiority was not just about the scoreline. The match stats make it unmistakable.

With 23 shots to Arouca's mere 4, and eight big chances created against just one for the visitors, the final score could almost be considered modest given how the match played out. The xG estimate calculated from the shots taken in the match (an in-house metric, not a prediction) backs up that reading: 2.72 for Porto against just 0.58 for Arouca.

What the standings show

In the table, Porto now has 9 points from three matches played, all wins, and stays in first place. Arouca, for its part, came into this game with 6 points from three matchdays and now sits 3 points behind tonight's opponent. The loss does not push Arouca out of the upper half of the table, but it does confirm that this Porto side, at least in the early going, is setting a pace nobody else has matched yet.

For Arouca, the takeaway is clear: despite the changes tried in the second half, the team could not generate real danger and was forced to defend for almost the entire match. For Porto, the message is different: given the sheer volume of shots and chances, the problem was never creating them, only converting in time, something the team ultimately sorted out in just twenty minutes of the second half.
