Santa Clara Rout Arouca to Stay Unbeaten in Liga Portugal

Two blows in eight minutes were all Santa Clara needed to flip the script at the Estádio Municipal de Arouca. The visitors went up 0-2 before the half-hour mark, and although Arouca pulled one back right before the break, it wasn't enough: the final score was 1-2 in Santa Clara's favor in Liga Portugal.

The home side had controlled possession from the start, but it was Santa Clara who struck first. In the 21st minute, Gonçalo Paciência finished with his right foot from the center of the box, low and just inside the left post, off an assist from Djé Tavares. Fourteen minutes later, Tavares himself doubled the lead with a fine strike: a left-footed shot from long range, from the left side and at a tough angle, that again found the net by the left post, set up by a pass from Pedro Pacheco. The 0-2 scoreline left Arouca needing a response before halftime.

And they got one right at the death of the first half. In the 45th minute, Barbero headed home from point-blank range, from the left side and into the top corner, off a cross from Naïs Djouahra following a corner kick. The 1-2 scoreline at the break gave some life back to an Arouca side that had created chances (Barbero himself had already tested the keeper in the 17th minute, and Naïs Djouahra came close in the 43rd) but hadn't found the breakthrough until then.

The second half, however, didn't bring the equalizer the home side was chasing. Arouca pushed on the flanks, with Gabriel Rukavina and Fally Mayulu on the pitch after substitutions, but Santa Clara managed to hold onto the lead despite being down to ten men from the 84th minute, when Sorriso was shown a second yellow card for dangerous play and sent off.
