PSG Sign Godts and Ferran Torres in Same Weekend, Loading an Attack With More Talent Than Ever

PSG no longer knows what to do with so many forwards. The Paris club, reigning Champions League titleholders, wrapped up two attacking signings in a single weekend that leave their roster almost indecently stacked with talent: Belgian winger Mika Godts, arriving from Ajax, and Spaniard Ferran Torres, joining from Barcelona.

The Godts announcement went public on Saturday night, with no official figures released. The club did not disclose financial details, but the sports newspaper L'Equipe estimated the deal at around 55 million euros (roughly $64 million) including add-ons. He signed for five seasons. It was the second blow of the weekend, since hours earlier the club had already confirmed the arrival of Torres, a World Cup champion with Spain, for a fee estimated at 50 million euros.

Godts is 21 and has a background well known in Belgium: he came through Anderlecht's youth ranks, spent time at Genk and finally broke out at Ajax, a club he joined after standing out at Jong Ajax, the reserve side that serves as a bridge to the first team. He is left footed by nature but strikes well with his right, no small detail for a winger who typically plays cutting in from the left flank.

His development in Amsterdam built steadily. In his first full season he scored eight goals in 47 matches and left a strong impression in the Europa League. Last season he took the definitive leap forward: 17 goals and 15 assists in 44 matches, numbers that also earned him a place in the Belgian national team.

The player himself did not hide his excitement over the move:

Now, how much will he actually play? That is the big question. The attack Godts is walking into in Paris was already overflowing with names before he and Torres ever set foot in the city. Ferran Torres arrived just weeks after the club closed the signing of French winger Maghnes Akliouche from Monaco. Add those three reinforcements to a forward line that already includes Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele, French attackers Desire Doue and Bradley Barcola (linked with a possible move to Liverpool), and Georgian winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

A Season Already Starting With Silverware in Hand

PSG do not enter this transfer window hungry for results, they arrive backed by them. Dembele, in fact, set up Doue for the goal that gave the team the UEFA Super Cup against Aston Villa on Wednesday. It was the first of as many as six possible trophies the club could lift this season, and the run continued Sunday with the Trophee des Champions against Lens, the match that pits the league champion against the previous season's cup winner.

Against this backdrop, Godts and Torres are not walking straight into starting roles. Instead, they arrive to compete within one of the most talent stocked attacking rosters in Europe.
