Ferran Torres' early strike settles PSG thriller against Brest

It took Paris Saint-Germain just four minutes to settle a match that would go on to get tougher than expected. Ferran Torres finished with his right foot from outside the box after a pass from Ousmane Dembele, and that 0-1 turned out to be all that separated the two sides at Stade Francis-Le Ble. The result is worth three points for PSG in Ligue 1, though the final score reflects little of how the match actually played out.

The goal came in a blistering start: in the 2nd minute Nuno Mendes had already given a warning with a shot that was blocked following a Khvicha Kvaratskhelia assist, and a minute later Achraf Hakimi tried his luck from outside the area. Third time was the charm for Ferran Torres, who made it 0-1 almost before Brest had touched the ball with any real intent.

A dominant performance that didn't translate into more goals

With the lead in hand so early, PSG were able to control the ball as they pleased, finishing with 59.3% possession and 650 passes to Brest's 428. But Brest didn't hide. After that chance, the match began to fade. Brest kept trying through Doumbia and Ajorque, and in the closing stretch, after the substitutions, Joao Neves had two clear shots (68th and 70th minutes) that didn't turn into a second goal for the Parisians. The introductions of Desire Doue, Maghnes Akliouche, Fabian Ruiz and others for PSG didn't change the scoreline, and Brest, with Djylian N'Guessan and Joseph Nonge already on the pitch, couldn't find an equalizer in stoppage time.

The total shot count (16 to 15) tells a story more even than the scoreline suggests, and the xG estimate calculated after the fact from the match's shots confirms it: 1.37 for Brest against 1.25 for PSG. In other words, based on the chances created, the home side could have walked away with more than a loss, but Ferran Torres' early goal and a lack of finishing in the final third left the hosts empty handed.
