Santa Clara Snatches Late Point at Alverca
Brenner scored in the 86th minute to cancel out Vivaldo Semedo's goal, leaving the score 1-1 at the Complexo Desportivo FC Alverca.

Alverca came within nine minutes of a win that had eluded them all season, but Santa Clara once again pulled out a late point, and the match finished 1-1 at the Complexo Desportivo FC Alverca. Vivaldo Semedo had put the home side ahead in the 68th minute, and with the clock reading 86, Brenner leveled things up for the Azoreans.
The first half went by scoreless despite Santa Clara offering a few warning signs: Tiago Ribeiro tried twice from outside the box, and Sorriso forced a low save in the 37th minute. Alverca, for their part, kept pushing down the flanks and won several corners, but lacked precision: Ian Luccas missed two clear chances, the last one right at the end of first-half stoppage time.
The second half picked up pace with the substitutions. Santa Clara brought on Vitinho and Brenner in the 62nd minute, and just six minutes later came the play that broke the deadlock: in the 68th minute, following a corner kick, Isaac James whipped in a cross that Vivaldo Semedo headed home from close range to make it 1-0. Alverca also turned to their bench, bringing on Samy Merheg, Sergi Gomez and Marco Essimi in an effort to hold onto the lead.
It didn't work. Santa Clara kept pressing through Welinton Torrao, who had come on in the 70th minute, and his cross into the box found Brenner, who finished with his right foot by the left post to make it 1-1 in the 86th minute. In stoppage time, with five extra minutes signaled, yellow cards went to Figueiredo and to Brenner himself, and the visiting forward had one final shot that this time was met by the goalkeeper's gloves.
The numbers behind the result
Possession was split almost evenly, but Santa Clara clearly dominated in the final third, finishing with an estimated xG of 1.758 compared to Alverca's 0.529, according to our calculation based on the shots taken during the match.
| Stat | Alverca | Santa Clara |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 49.5 | 50.5 |
| Shots | 5 | 15 |
| Shots on target | 1 | 3 |
| Big chances | 1 | 2 |
| Corners | 10 | 4 |
| Passes | 345 | 354 |
| Fouls committed | 14 | 9 |
Alverca won the corner count, ten to four, but that never translated into real danger: just one shot on target the entire match. Santa Clara, meanwhile, tripled the total shot count and created clearer opportunities, something the final score only partly reflected.
Heading into the match, our projection gave Alverca a 32% chance of winning, 33% for a draw and 35% for a Santa Clara victory, with expected goals of 1.05 for the home side and 1.1 for the visitors. The draw ended up being exactly the most likely outcome under that forecast, and the split of points turned out to be the closest match to what we anticipated, though the flow of the game, with Santa Clara far more incisive, was more one-sided than those numbers suggested.
What the result means for the standings
The draw leaves the two clubs in very different spots in the Liga Portugal table. Santa Clara now has 8 points in the competition, with two wins and two draws in four matches played, holding onto fourth place. Alverca, on the other hand, sit on just 2 points after two draws and two losses in their four outings, down in 13th place, six points behind their opponent on the day.
For Alverca, Semedo's goal and those nine minutes in front weren't enough to break a run of results that still gives them no breathing room in the table. For Santa Clara, the point salvaged in the closing stages confirms that, even when not dominating on the scoreboard, this team has enough to create danger right up until the final whistle.
