Sporting CP storm back to overpower Galatasaray in Champions League opener

It started poorly for Sporting CP and finished as a clear statement win for the home side. In just four minutes, an own goal from Goncalo Inacio put Galatasaray ahead at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, but the match ended 3-1 in favor of the Portuguese club, who stormed back in the second half and secured their spot near the top of the Champions League league phase.

The first half was an open, back and forth affair with more Turkish chances than Portuguese ones despite the early misfortune. Just three minutes in, in the 53rd minute, Ismail Jakobs brought down Luis Suarez inside the box for a penalty, and the Uruguayan made no mistake from the spot in the 56th minute to make it 2-1. Six minutes later, in the 62nd minute, Rodrigo Zalazar extended the lead with a stunning direct free kick, curled with his right foot into the top left corner, to make it a final 3-1. Between those goals, Galatasaray had answers through Baris Alper Yilmaz and Gabriel Sara, but couldn't find a way back into the match.

Substitutions on both benches, including the introductions of Rafael Leao, Ilkay Gundogan and Fotis Ioannidis, didn't change the flow of the closing stretch, which wound down with a handful of fouls and little real danger at either end.
