Sporting Kansas City Stuns Los Angeles FC With Surprise Rout at Sporting Park

Nobody had Sporting Kansas City winning tonight at Sporting Park. Our pre-match model gave them just an 11% chance of winning, compared to 70% for Los Angeles Football Club. The result went exactly the other way: Sporting Kansas City 3, Los Angeles Football Club 1, with the home side prevailing despite entering the match at the bottom of the MLS West group.

The story was written in the first half hour. In the 17th minute, Andre Luiz curled a left-footed finish from inside the box into the top corner, set up by Justin Reynolds, for a 1-0 lead. Thirteen minutes later, in the 30th, Taylor Calheira headed home from close range to make it 2-0, on a play that came just seconds after Stephen Afrifa had rattled the post with a shot. Kansas City went into halftime with a lead that had seemed almost unthinkable beforehand.

LAFC responded immediately after the restart. With Mark Delgado and Jacob Shaffelburg already on the field following a double substitution at the break, the clock had barely struck the 46th minute when Denis Bouanga, assisted by Shaffelburg himself, finished from point-blank range to make it 2-1. The goal seemed to spark a comeback, and for much of the second half the visitors pushed hard, creating chances through Son Heung-Min, Armindo Sieb and Bouanga himself, without finding the equalizer.

The knockout blow came in the 70th minute: Jacob Bartlett, who had entered shortly before in place of Kwaku Agyabeng, finished with his right foot from the center of the box to make it 3-1, which closed out the scoring. There was still time for more attempts from Los Angeles Football Club, with shots from Ryan Hollingshead, Eddie Segura and Son Heung-Min failing to find the target, but the result never changed.

A Game of Contrasts

The match numbers tell a different story than the scoreline. LAFC controlled possession with 58.1% to Kansas City's 41.9%, and also outshot the hosts while leading in corners and total passes. Efficiency, however, belonged to the home side.

The xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots also favors the visitors: 2.368 for Los Angeles Football Club versus 1.905 for Kansas City. This is our own estimate, not an official figure, but it confirms that LAFC created more danger than the final score suggests. Even so, soccer is decided by goals, and there Kansas City was sharper at the moments that mattered.

The result runs completely counter to our pre-match projection, where expected goals pointed to a combined total of 3.15, with 0.83 for the home side and 2.32 for the visitors: the model expected a match tilted toward Los Angeles Football Club, and it ended up being exactly the opposite.

What the Result Leaves Behind

For Sporting Kansas City, sitting 15th in the West group with 18 points from 24 matches played, the win is a momentary breather in a difficult season. For Los Angeles Football Club, fifth with 40 points from 26 matches, the loss caps a night in which they controlled the ball without being able to turn it into goals. The 22-point gap between the two sides in the standings makes clear the contrast in form they carried into the match, something that tonight at Sporting Park was not reflected on the field.
