Sturm Graz strikes once, survives the storm to edge Marseille 1-0

Diakité's early goal was enough for Sturm Graz to hold off a Marseille side that dominated possession but crashed its chances off the post and crossbar in the Europa League.

Sturm Graz strikes once, survives the storm to edge Marseille 1-0

Sturm Graz barely touched the ball, but they touched it where it hurt. Oumar Diakité finished with his right foot from outside the box in the 12th minute, off an assist from Luca Weinhandl, and that lone goal was enough for the Austrian side to come away with a 1-0 win over Marseille at Stadion Graz-Liebenau in the Europa League.

The goal pretty much sums up Sturm Graz's whole night: few trips into the opponent's box, but efficient ones. Diakité struck from distance with his right foot, and the ball snuck in on the right side of the goal guarded by Jeffrey de Lange, putting his team ahead in a match where, statistically, Marseille controlled nearly everything.

Because what followed was a siege that never paid off. Marseille created chance after chance: Simon Seidl rattled the crossbar in the 37th minute, and two minutes later Keyliane Abdallah answered for the visitors by clipping the right post. Between the post and the bar, the match could have swung the other way in a matter of seconds, and it didn't. The first half ended with Sturm Graz ahead on the scoreboard despite being clearly outplayed.

The second half followed much the same script. Marseille kept pushing with the substitutions they brought on (Igor Paixão, Himad Abdelli, Pierre-Emile Højbjerg and Timothy Weah among them) and gave warning signs with shots from Paixão that drifted just wide of the posts, but they lacked precision in the final third. Sturm Graz, for their part, focused on managing what they had: they defended with discipline, fouled to break up the opponent's rhythm, and when they could, pushed forward with players like Belmin Beganovic or Valmir Matoshi to relieve the pressure.

A massive gap in ball control

The numbers make clear who had the initiative and who made the most of their moment:

StatSturm GrazMarseille
Possession (%)28.471.6
Shots1314
Shots on target51
Corners24
Passes273676
Fouls committed239

The most striking figure is shots on target: Sturm Graz put 5 of 13 attempts on frame, while Marseille, despite holding nearly three-quarters of possession and completing 676 passes, only managed 1 of 14 on target. That gap goes a long way toward explaining the result: the home side was far more clinical with what little they had.

The estimated xG figures based on shot locations (a measure calculated after the match, not a pre-match projection) also give a slight edge to Sturm Graz, with 1.78 compared to Marseille's 1.07, a contrast to what the possession numbers alone would suggest, but confirmation that the Austrian side created real danger every time they got forward.

Before the match, our projection gave Sturm Graz a 40% chance of winning, a 28% chance of a draw and a 32% chance of a Marseille win, with expected goals of 1.54 for the home side and 1.35 for the visitors. The final result, a tight 1-0, fell on the side the model considered more likely, though with a tighter scoreline than those numbers anticipated.

The match also had its share of tension: four yellow cards were shown, to Angel Gomes, Oumar Diakité, Luca Weinhandl, Amine Gouiri, Arjan Malic and Bamo Meïté, along with an injury to Jon Gorenc Stankovic that briefly stopped play in the first half.

With this result, Sturm Graz moves to 4 points so far in the competition, the product of one win, one draw and one loss, and stays 4 points clear of Marseille, who still haven't picked up a win: three losses in three matches played so far. For the French side, dominating possession and creating chances wasn't enough this time; for Sturm Graz, with far less of the ball, one clinical strike inside the first quarter hour was all it took to claim the three points at home.
