Stuttgart thrashes Slovan Bratislava 3-0 for second straight Champions League win

An own goal from Sandro Cruz and strikes from Undav and Demirovic gave Stuttgart a wire-to-wire victory, leaving Slovan pointless after two matchdays.

Stuttgart thrashes Slovan Bratislava 3-0 for second straight Champions League win

The Národny Futbalový Štadión was left with nothing to cheer for Slovan Bratislava on the night: 0-3 against VfB Stuttgart, with the match all but decided by halftime and put away in a closing stretch where the Slovak side had no answers left. The result leaves Slovan with two losses in two matches in this phase of the Champions League, while Stuttgart has now won its second straight game in the competition.

What stands out is that the match did not start the way it ended. In the opening minutes, Slovan Bratislava actually pushed forward: Tigran Barseghyan tried his luck from outside the box two minutes in, and Andraz Sporar had a couple of chances past the half-hour mark that failed to find the target. But Stuttgart, controlling far more of the ball, gradually turned up the pressure until the 28th minute, when the first crack appeared: Angelo Stiller sprung a counterattack and Deniz Undav finished with his left foot from inside the box to make it 0-1. Before the break, Stuttgart had also rattled the crossbar with a shot from Josha Vagnoman, a sign that the German side's dominance ran much deeper than the scoreline suggested.

The second half: a verdict delivered in two blows

The second half began with Slovan still showing some fight: Sandro Cruz struck the crossbar in the 60th minute and Cristian Martínez tried his luck a couple of times from tough angles. But the luck that had seemed to elude Stuttgart in the first half swung in its favor: in the 64th minute, Sandro Cruz himself turned the ball into his own net for 0-2, a brutal psychological blow just fifteen minutes after he had been the one threatening with his own shot off the woodwork.

From there the match was effectively settled, though Stuttgart did not ease off. With both benches already having made their substitutions, the third goal arrived in stoppage time: in the 89th minute, Lorenz Assignon whipped in a cross that substitute Ermedin Demirovic, just on the field, headed home at close range by the left post to make it a final 0-3. Slovan still tried to put a better face on the scoreline with a couple of attempts from Nino Marcelli in added time, without success.

The numbers confirm the gap

The match statistics make clear just how wide the gap was between the two sides over the 90 minutes:

StatisticSlovan BratislavaVfB Stuttgart
Possession (%)35.964.1
Shots1516
Shots on target18
Big chances15
Corners18
Passes358629
Fouls committed1115

Even though Slovan matched Stuttgart in total shots, it only managed to put one on target all match, compared to eight for Stuttgart. That gap in finishing quality also shows up in the estimated xG for the match, calculated from the location of each shot: 1.081 for Slovan versus 2.629 for Stuttgart, a difference that confirms the German side not only had more of the ball but also created far more dangerous chances.

Our pre-match preview gave a 40% chance to a home win, 26% to a draw and 34% to an away win, with combined expected goals of 3.25 (1.7 for Slovan, 1.55 for Stuttgart). What actually unfolded was far from that balanced forecast: Stuttgart did not just win comfortably, it did so without ever letting the match get complicated, built on a near-total grip on possession that the preview had not anticipated to this degree.

In the standings, Stuttgart now sits on 6 points from two matches played, unbeaten, while Slovan Bratislava remains on zero points after two outings as well, with a goal difference that is already taking its toll. The gap between the two sides in the table stands at 6 points, an accurate reflection of what played out on the field in Bratislava.
