Tottenham stuns Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with late 0-2 win

An own goal and a Mathys Tel screamer in the closing minutes, plus a Cole Palmer red card, hand Tottenham a win that completely overturns the pre-match forecast.

Tottenham stuns Chelsea at Stamford Bridge with late 0-2 win

Chelsea controlled the clock but not the ball, and with 14 minutes left the match fell apart in a matter of seconds. An own goal by Mike Penders in the 76th minute and a right-footed strike from Mathys Tel in the 86th gave Tottenham Hotspur a 0-2 win at Stamford Bridge, a result that almost nobody at home saw coming before kickoff.

The match had been a Tottenham monologue, with the score level for nearly all of the first half and much of the second. With 68.5% possession and 639 passes to Chelsea's 287, the visitors ran the game without finding the net: Mohammed Kudus, Omar Marmoush and Sandro Tonali all tried their luck from inside and outside the box, but Chelsea held firm, with shots saved or blocked, well past the hour mark. Chelsea, for their part, gave an early warning with a Cole Palmer shot in the 13th minute that forced a save off the crossbar, and created further chances through Jordan Henderson, Morgan Rogers and Pedro Neto, though none of them turned into a goal.

The stretch that decided it all

The game flipped in barely ten minutes. In the 76th minute, the ball ended up in Chelsea's own net courtesy of an own goal from Mike Penders, making it 0-1 for Tottenham Hotspur. Three minutes later, in the 79th, Cole Palmer picked up a second yellow card for dangerous play and left his side down to ten men, a double blow that shaped the closing stretch. With Chelsea down a man and forced to open up, Tottenham extended the lead in the 86th minute with a right-footed strike from Mathys Tel from outside the box, low and into the left-hand corner, for the final 0-2.

The numbers behind the match

The stats back up what played out on the field: a Tottenham side that controlled the ball and the clear-cut chances.

According to our estimate of expected goals generated in the match, calculated from shot locations, Tottenham accumulated 0.98 xG against Chelsea's 0.41, a gap that backs up the visitors' territorial dominance even though the final scoreline ended up wider than those numbers would suggest.

The result runs directly against what we had projected beforehand, when we gave Chelsea a 58% chance of winning against 20% for Tottenham Hotspur, with a draw at 22%, and expected goals of 2.21 for the home side against 1.27 for the visitors. None of it held up: the team with the longer odds on paper was the one that walked away with all three points, and it did so without needing a goal from open play through the first 90 minutes of its own dominance, breaking through only in the closing stretch.

What it means in the standings

Heading into this round, Chelsea sat in 4th place with 13 points from 8 matches played (4 wins, 1 draw, 3 losses), while Tottenham Hotspur sat in 12th with 9 points also from 8 matches (2 wins, 3 draws, 3 losses), a gap of 4 points between the two sides. The home defeat, compounded by Cole Palmer's red card, leaves Chelsea with work to do to hold onto their place near the top of the table, while Tottenham Hotspur walk away with a road win that carries weight, built on possession and sealed in the final minutes.
