VAR Wipes Out Mitchell Goal as Leeds Stays Unbeaten Against Crystal Palace

A goal disallowed by VAR for Tyrick Mitchell kept the scoreboard blank between Leeds United and Crystal Palace, in an even contest that finished 0-0 at Elland Road.

VAR Wipes Out Mitchell Goal as Leeds Stays Unbeaten Against Crystal Palace

VAR was the only thing that managed to put a goal on the board at Elland Road, and it wound up wiping it right back off. In the 51st minute, Tyrick Mitchell thought he had put Crystal Palace in front, but a review overturned the goal and left the 0-0 scoreline untouched between Leeds United and Crystal Palace in the Premier League. That, in essence, summed up the afternoon: chances came and went, but no shot ever truly crossed the line.

The match opened with intensity and few lulls. Leeds tested the waters first, with a long-range effort from Anton Stach in the third minute and a run from James Justin shortly after. Crystal Palace's response came quickly: Quinten Timber had a chance that flew well over the bar following a pass from Takehiro Tomiyasu. The home side kept pushing down the flanks and created danger from a set piece, too: a cross from Anton Stach off a corner found Tarik Muharemovic's head, but the effort drifted wide.

Crystal Palace answered through Adam Wharton, who tried his luck from outside the box in the 20th minute with a low shot that James Trafford gathered along the ground, and minutes later through Daichi Kamada, who forced another save from the goalkeeper. Leeds threatened again through Ao Tanaka and another chance for Jayden Bogle off a cross from Gabriel Gudmundsson, but the first half ended scoreless, with both sides generating shots but lacking the finishing touch to break the deadlock.

The Phantom Goal and the Decisive Stretch

The second half began with Crystal Palace bringing on Jefferson Lerma for Tomiyasu, with the visitors pushing forward in search of the opener. Yeremy Pino and Daichi Kamada both tried their luck with shots that Trafford handled without much trouble. Then came the moment that could have changed everything: in the 51st minute, Tyrick Mitchell put the ball in the net on a play that appeared to have broken the deadlock, but VAR stepped in and the decision was clear: no goal. The score stayed 0-0.

Leeds answered with a double attempt from Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Tarik Muharemovic between the 55th and 56th minutes, both of which were denied. Yellow cards followed for Ao Tanaka and Adam Wharton in a run of fouls that broke up the rhythm of the match. With Daniel James and Brenden Aaronson coming on for the home side, and Ismaila Sarr and Eddie Nketiah entering for the visitors, the match searched for a resolution that never arrived. Daichi Kamada had the clearest chance of the closing stretch, a point-blank header in the 84th minute that finished just wide, and Leeds answered with one last attempt from Muharemovic two minutes later. The referee added three minutes of stoppage time, but the 0-0 held all the way to the final whistle.

The numbers point to an even match with no clear dominant side. Leeds had more shots overall, but less precision: just 2 of their 13 attempts hit the target, compared to 4 for Crystal Palace. Possession was split nearly 50-50, something reflected as well in the passing numbers, almost identical for both sides. Based on our estimate calculated from the match's shot data, Leeds generated 1.31 expected goals and Crystal Palace 1.21, figures that confirm just how tight the contest was, even though neither side managed to convert that volume of play into a goal.

Our preview published ahead of the match gave Leeds a 44% chance of winning, with 29% for a draw and 27% for Crystal Palace, with combined expected goals of 2.63. The final result, a 0-0 with no goals from either side, fell well short of that attacking forecast and ended up proving the least likely of the three outcomes right.

With this draw, Leeds United moves to 9 points from 5 matches played, still unbeaten so far this season, while Crystal Palace remains on 4 points from the same number of matches. The gap between the two sides in the table now stands at 5 points, and this afternoon's split of points doesn't change much for either club: Leeds holds onto its unbeaten record, while Crystal Palace continues searching for a way to right a rocky start to the season.
