Emiliano Díaz Opens the Door to a Ramón Return at River: "How Could I Not Like It? It's the White House"

The question had been hanging in the air ever since Eduardo Coudet's exit was confirmed. This time, though, it wasn't a fan on social media who answered it, but someone who knows the situation from the inside: Emiliano Díaz, son and right-hand man to Ramón Díaz in every one of his coaching projects.

It all started with Thursday's announcement: River brought Coudet's cycle to a close after being eliminated in the round of 16 of the Copa Sudamericana against Independiente Santa Fe. Chacho leaves the club with a record of 27 games in charge: 13 wins, six draws and eight losses. While the club's leadership figures out its next move, Leonardo Ponzio has taken over on an interim basis.

Against that backdrop, Emiliano spoke with ESPN and didn't dodge a thing. First came the human side: he's known Coudet since his playing days, and the news hit close to home.

This isn't the first time Ramón Díaz's name has come up whenever River hits a rough patch. The Rioja native has been without a club for some time now, and he stands behind Marcelo Gallardo as the second most decorated coach in the club's history, with nine trophies won across three separate stints in charge of the squad.

His last spell at Núñez ended in 2014, when he claimed the Torneo Final and the Copa Campeonato. Ever since, whenever there's institutional or sporting turbulence at River, his name resurfaces among the more nostalgic sections of the fan base.

Emiliano's words don't confirm anything concrete, but they don't close any doors either. At a moment when the club needs to settle on who will take permanent charge of the team, the mere mention of the possibility was enough to reignite hope among a segment of the fan base that still looks back fondly on those years of Ramón at the helm of the Millonario.
