Enzo Fernández joins Manchester City for £125 million in Premier League's most expensive transfer ever

The saga is over. On the final day of the Premier League transfer window, Enzo Fernández got what he had quietly been asking for over the past few weeks: a move away from Chelsea to Manchester City. The Argentine midfielder has a new club now, and more importantly, the coach he wanted.

The reported fee stands at £125 million (roughly 146 million euros, about $169 million), according to ESPN. That figure makes the deal the most expensive transfer in English soccer history, matching what Liverpool paid for Alexander Isak last summer. Not bad for a player who arrived at Stamford Bridge from Benfica for 121 million just three years ago.

Fernández signed a six-year deal, with an option for an additional year, tying him to the sky blue side of Manchester through 2033. And that's where the name behind much of this story comes in: Enzo Maresca, his former manager at Chelsea, now in charge at the Etihad Stadium following Pep Guardiola's departure.

A decision about role, not just loyalty

Why pick Manchester City over Chelsea? The answer isn't just about the relationship with Maresca. It's mostly about the role Fernández wants to play on the field. The player himself had made that pretty clear a while back.

At Chelsea, that margin of freedom was set to shrink. With Cole Palmer, Morgan Rogers and Estêvão occupying the attacking spaces and Moisés Caicedo as his usual partner in midfield, the chances of moving without constraints were getting slimmer under Xabi Alonso's new setup. At Manchester City, though, the picture is different: the club brought in Elliot Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi, two more positionally minded, defense-oriented players, brought in partly to cover for Rodri's absence. That leaves Enzo the role he prefers: less anchoring, more runs into the box.

That's where an interesting partnership with Rayan Cherki could emerge, a very different type of player who could complement him in attack. And there's already a track record with Maresca: under his management at Chelsea, Fernández racked up 39 goal contributions in 81 matches, a number that shows the leap he made as a player with more attacking involvement, not just as a defensive shield.

A transfer among the priciest in history

Manchester City had already broken its own transfer record with the 135 million euros paid for Anderson, but Fernández's deal topped that once again. For context: the most expensive transfer in history remains Neymar's move from Barcelona to PSG in 2017 for 222 million euros. Kylian Mbappé, also bound for Paris, cost 180 million in a deal completed in two stages between 2017 and 2018.

Fernández, born in 2001 and developed at River Plate, leaves Chelsea with a record of 169 appearances and 31 goals, along with Club World Cup and UEFA Conference League titles. With the Argentina national team, he already has a World Cup on his resume from Qatar 2022, plus a runner-up finish in 2026. Now a new chapter begins, this time in sky blue.
