Enzo Maresca Takes Over at Manchester City with a Younger Squad After Guardiola's Exit

The Italian arrives with more fixed tactical setups and a revamped roster of young signings following the departures of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and other veterans.

Enzo Maresca Takes Over at Manchester City with a Younger Squad After Guardiola's Exit

Replacing the best manager of the last 20 years is no small task, but somebody had to do it. That somebody is Enzo Maresca, chosen by Manchester City to take the reins following Pep Guardiola's departure, in one of the most delicate managerial transitions English soccer has seen in years.

Guardiola himself left behind a line that captures the weight of the bond being severed:

"Nothing lasts forever. What will last forever is the feeling, the people, the memories, the love I feel for my Manchester City."Pep Guardiola
With those words, the Catalan bid farewell to a club he shaped in his own image for nearly a decade. Now it falls to Maresca, who bears a striking physical resemblance to Pep himself, to try to win over the fans with that same passion.

The Italian himself was well aware of the challenge as soon as he took charge:

"Someone asked me if it was impossible to succeed him. Maybe, but at the same time it's a privilege: we're talking about the best manager in the world over the last 15 or 20 years."Enzo Maresca
Sensible words, though reality wasted no time putting him to a tough test: the Community Shield ended in a 0-3 loss to Arsenal, a blow that made clear just how much work lies ahead.

An Heir with His Own Stamp

Maresca isn't coming from nowhere. He worked with City's Under-23 side between 2020 and 2021, then spent a season as Guardiola's assistant before taking his first head coaching job at Leicester City, whom he led to the Championship title and back up to the Premier League. That track record makes him one of the most logical choices to safeguard Guardiola's legacy.

But the tactical differences are already showing. Spanish defender Nico González explained it plainly:

"We know they worked together and he learned a lot from Pep, but there's a big difference in the tactical structure. The current one is very set, without a lot of variation. And that's the biggest difference, because with Pep we used to change things around a lot, like sometimes playing with two center backs and sometimes with three."Nico González
Maresca's City appears to be settling into more fixed setups, switching between a 4-3-3 and a 4-2-3-1, with the same high press the Italian had already shown at Chelsea, the team he led to a 3-0 rout of PSG in the final of the 2025 Club World Cup.

A Squad in Transition

The most significant departure was Rodri, transferred to Barcelona. The Spaniard, a World Cup winner and the tournament's best player, had been a key piece of Guardiola's project, having scored the goal that gave City its first Champions League title in 2023 against Inter. Alongside him went other heavyweight names: Bernardo Silva (Real Madrid), John Stones (Inter), Tijjani Reijnders (Al-Qadsiah) and Nathan Aké (Fenerbahce), all players approaching their thirties.

In their place came much younger additions. The most notable was English midfielder Elliot Anderson, part of the England national team's double pivot alongside Declan Rice, signed for $158 million, a record fee for an English player despite him being just 23. The club also brought in Moroccan midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi, only 18 and a key figure for his national team at the World Cup, acquired from Lille for roughly $111 million. Also arriving were winger Jeremy Monga (17, from Leicester for about $14 million), French forward Mathys Detourbet (19, later loaned to Monaco) and Argentine goalkeeper Gerónimo Rulli, brought in as Donnarumma's backup.

With Haaland, Foden, Doku, Gvardiol, Días and Donnarumma still on the roster, Maresca isn't starting from scratch. He's 46, just a year older than Guardiola was when he arrived at City, though with a considerably shorter resume. It remains to be seen how much time he'll be given to write his own chapter.
