Erik Lira Turns Down $14 Million from Al Jazira, Nears Move to Monaco

The offer was set aside because Lira himself made clear that his priority is Europe, not Gulf football, no matter how attractive the contract looked.

That decision says a lot about where a 26 year old footballer wants to take his career, one who came up through Pumas' youth academy. After a stint at Necaxa, he established himself in Liga MX with the university club before Cruz Azul signed him in 2022. Since then he's kept climbing: he broke into the Mexican national team and ended up starting every game at a World Cup.

If the transfer goes through, Lira wouldn't be joining just any club within Europe's Mexican ecosystem. At Monaco he'd link up with Carlos Avina, the club's sporting director since 2023, another Mexican who knows the market well and likely had a hand in this deal coming together so quickly.
