Estrela Can't Hold Off Rio Ave: Six-Goal Thriller Ends 3-3

Three times Estrela took the lead at the Estádio do Rio Ave, and three times the home side pulled level, until Jalen Blesa converted a penalty in the 78th minute to seal a 3-3 that left both sides feeling the match had slipped away from them. It was a goal fest: six in total, five of them between the 47th and 60th minutes.

Estrela struck first, in the 20th minute, through a finish from Ianis Stoica set up by Leandro Antonetti. They took that lead into the break, but the second half had barely started when Rio Ave answered: in the 47th minute, right after the restart, Francisco Petrasso headed home from a Diogo Bezerra corner delivery. The equalizer didn't last long. In the 52nd minute, Abraham Marcus put Estrela back in front with a left-footed strike from inside the box, assisted by Max Scholze.

The match then entered its wildest stretch. Four minutes after the visitors' second goal, Roland Galcík leveled things again for Rio Ave with a shot from outside the area, once more set up by Bezerra, who had a hand in two goals in the span of nine minutes. But Estrela answered almost immediately: in the 60th minute, Marcus notched his second goal of the afternoon with a close-range finish into the corner off a Stoica cross, making it 2-3.

Rio Ave, who had already used all their substitutions, even had to deal with an injury to Nelson Abbey in the 68th minute without being able to replace him. Despite playing at that disadvantage, they found the equalizer in the 78th minute: a foul by Stefan Lekovic on Jalen Blesa inside the box, which also earned Lekovic a yellow card, resulted in a penalty that Blesa himself converted for the final 3-3.

A Visiting Side That Dominated but Couldn't Finish the Job

The numbers tell a clear story about who carried the weight of the game, even if the final score ended up even.

Estrela nearly doubled Rio Ave's shot count and controlled the ball for close to two-thirds of the match, but it wasn't enough to take home all three points. The xG estimate calculated from the match's shots backs up that edge: 2.748 for Estrela against 1.417 for Rio Ave, a gap that reflects the visitors' dominance but, like any post-match estimate, doesn't predict the outcome.

The final result, with six goals shared between the two teams, blew well past that goals projection, though the draw ended up being the least likely of the three outcomes according to that forecast.

For Rio Ave, the point feels like little reward given what they produced on the field, but it at least salvages an afternoon in which they twice found themselves behind. For Estrela, watching a 3-2 lead vanish late on, after a penalty conceded by Lekovic, leaves the sting of a missed opportunity in a match where they had done almost everything needed to win it.
