Sporting CP Steamrolls Rio Ave at the Estádio do Rio Ave
Luis Suárez and Geny Catamo each score twice as Sporting put the game away before halftime.

Four goals in 36 minutes and a match that was over before the break. Sporting CP ran roughshod over the Estádio do Rio Ave, cruising to a 0-4 rout that left the home side without answers from the first quarter hour onward.
The script was written in a hurry. It was only the 4th minute when Flávio Gonçalves curled a right-footed finish from the center of the box after a through ball from Issa Doumbia, making it 0-1. Rio Ave hadn't even settled into the match and already found itself behind. The bleeding continued in the 18th minute, when Geny Catamo, set up by Flávio Gonçalves on the counterattack, whipped a left-footed strike into the top corner for 0-2.
And the best of Luis Suárez was still to come. The forward struck twice before the break: in the 25th minute he pounced on a rebound inside the box to make it 0-3, and eleven minutes later, in the 36th, he curled a left-footed effort from outside the area that snuck in right along the post for 0-4, assisted by Maxi Araújo. By the time the referee blew the whistle for halftime, the match had already been decided from start to finish.
Total, unambiguous control
The second half was little more than a formality. Sporting kept the ball moving, created chances to extend the lead (a shot from Luís Guilherme in the 78th minute was saved, and Jesse Derry tried his luck deep into stoppage time) and managed the result without any real scares, while Rio Ave barely threatened with isolated attempts from Malik Sellouki and Dario Spikic.
The match numbers make the gulf in class clear:
| Stat | Rio Ave | Sporting CP |
|---|---|---|
| Possession (%) | 38.9 | 61.1 |
| Shots | 6 | 14 |
| Shots on target | - | 7 |
| Corners | 2 | 3 |
| Passes | 388 | 613 |
| Fouls committed | 7 | 14 |
Sporting held the ball for most of the match and was also far sharper in front of goal. According to our post-match xG estimate based on shot location, the visitors generated 1.71 expected goals to just 0.334 for Rio Ave, a gap that confirms what played out on the field: a one-way match from start to finish.
Our preview had pointed in this same direction. We projected a 75% win probability for Sporting CP, 17% for a draw and just 8% for Rio Ave, with expected goals of 2.53 for the visitors and 0.77 for the hosts. The final result actually exceeded that projection in Sporting's favor, as the team scored four goals compared to the roughly two and a half we had forecast.
What the result means in the standings
In the Liga Portugal table, Sporting CP moves to 10 points from 4 matches played, with a record of 3 wins, 1 draw and no losses, holding onto first place. Rio Ave, meanwhile, has just 3 points from its 4 matches, with 1 win and 3 losses, leaving it in the lower half of the table with a negative goal difference. The two sides are separated by 7 points, a gap this rout only helped confirm on the field.
