Estudiantes explodes late to rout Gimnasia Mendoza 3-0

A tight, scoreless match blew open in the final eleven minutes, as Estudiantes de La Plata scored three times to beat Gimnasia Mendoza 3-0 at the Jorge Luis Hirschi.

Estudiantes explodes late to rout Gimnasia Mendoza 3-0

For nearly an hour and a half, it was a tight, scoreless grind, and then everything was settled in eleven minutes of madness: Estudiantes de La Plata put up a 3-0 scoreline against Gimnasia Mendoza at the Jorge Luis Hirschi, with all three goals coming between the 82nd minute and stoppage time. A match that looked headed for a draw ended up as a clear rout in the Argentine Primera División.

The home side controlled more of the first half than the scoreboard suggested, with shots from Edwuin Cetré and Santiago Núñez, one of them grazing the post, but it stayed 0-0 through the break. In the second half, Estudiantes kept pressing, with Joaquín Tobio Burgos clipping the crossbar and Guido Carrillo testing the keeper after coming on, while Gimnasia Mendoza answered with flashes from Facundo Lencioni and Ezequiel Muñoz, but neither side could find the net.

The breakthrough came in the 79th minute, when Diego Mondino brought down Guido Carrillo inside the box and was shown a yellow card for the foul. Three minutes later, in the 82nd, Cetré made no mistake from the penalty spot, driving a low shot with his right foot just inside the left post to make it 1-0. From there, Gimnasia Mendoza had no answers. In the 89th minute, Fabricio Pérez pounced on a counterattack and finished with his right foot to make it 2-0, and deep into stoppage time, in the 93rd, Pérez struck again, heading home from close range off a cross from Gastón Benedetti to seal the final 3-0.

What the numbers say

The stats confirm Estudiantes were the better side, though without an overwhelming edge for most of the match: more possession, more shots and more clear-cut chances.

Looking at the xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots, Estudiantes generated 3.76 expected goals against Gimnasia Mendoza's 1.42, a gap that backs up the lopsided final score even though it was concentrated in the closing stretch.

The pre-match projection had Estudiantes as favorites with a 53% chance of winning, against a 31% chance of a draw and just 16% for Gimnasia Mendoza, with expected goals of 1.42 for the home side and 0.68 for the visitors. The final result ended up much wider than those numbers suggested: the 3-0 scoreline blew well past the projected total of 2.10 goals heading into kickoff.

What it means in the standings

In Group A, Gimnasia Mendoza arrived in seventh place with 17 points from 11 matches played (5 wins, 2 draws and 4 losses), while Estudiantes de La Plata sat ninth with 13 points from the same number of matches (4 wins, 1 draw and 6 losses), a 4-point gap between the two sides heading into the match. The rout lets Estudiantes grab all three points in a tournament where they had little margin to spare, while Gimnasia Mendoza comes away empty-handed on a night when the final score ended up far more severe than the run of play had shown for nearly ninety minutes.
