Estudiantes and Corinthians Play to a Draw in First Leg of Quarterfinal Clash

The cameras had barely settled in at the Jorge Luis Hirschi when Estudiantes de La Plata was already celebrating. In the 3rd minute, off a corner kick, Alexis Castro poked the ball in from close range to make it 1-0, assisted by Eros Mancuso. It was a lightning start that ultimately wasn't reflected in the final score: Estudiantes de La Plata and Corinthians drew 1-1 in a quarterfinal clash in the Copa Libertadores.

The home side threw itself forward from the opening minute. Even before the goal, Guido Carrillo had already tested the Corinthians defense with a header that was stopped right under the crossbar. With the lead in hand, Estudiantes kept pushing, winning several corners, creating chances down the flanks and controlling the run of play for much of the first half, which closed with the hosts up 1-0.

But the start of the second half flipped the script. Just three minutes into the restart, Corinthians found the equalizer on a quick break: Kaio César finished with his left foot, low and inside the post, after a through ball from Rodrigo Garro following a counterattack. The 1-1 came in the 48th minute and handed the momentum back to the visitors.

From there, the game leveled out and neither side found the net again. Estudiantes had its chances through Guido Carrillo, who tried his luck more than once from inside and outside the box without success, and through Joaquín Tobio Burgos working down the left flank. Corinthians answered with Matheuzinho and Rodrigo Garro testing shots from outside the area, though without seriously troubling the home goalkeeper. Deep into stoppage time, with six extra minutes signaled by the fourth official, Joaquín Correa had the last chance with a header that flew just wide of the right post, but the 1-1 held until the final whistle.

The numbers help explain why Estudiantes was left with a bittersweet feeling despite being the sharper team on the night:

Estudiantes doubled Corinthians' shot count and fired nearly twice as many attempts on target, on top of dominating the corner kick count by a wide margin. That edge also shows up in the xG calculated after the fact from the match's shots, an in-house estimate rather than an official figure: 1.344 for the home side compared to 0.648 for the visitors. The numbers back up the idea that Estudiantes did more to win the game, but Kaio César's goal, born out of a quick transition rather than a buildup of chances, was enough for Corinthians to walk away from La Plata with a point.

Before kickoff, our projection gave Estudiantes a 38% chance of winning, a 35% chance of a draw and a 27% chance of a visitor's win, with expected goals of 1.02 for the home side and 0.82 for the visitors. The result ended up falling into the least likely of the three scenarios, yet it's the one that actually happened: a draw, though with a goal split fairly close to what was forecast.

Both teams arrived at this matchup after getting past the round of 16. Estudiantes de La Plata eliminated Universidad Católica with a 1-1 draw away from home and a 3-0 rout at home, while Corinthians knocked out Rosario Central with a 0-0 draw on the road and a tight 1-0 win at home.
